South Africa is not the problem....it's the South Africans....?

Travel Info
Anyone reading these threads would be think that SAfrica has not changed at all in 13 years of democracy and 17 years of apartheid being dead and buried---- skaam vir julle!
My family are of English origin and lived on and off in SA along with other parts of Africa since the 1880's. Mr Great-great-grandfather was an uitlander who had an iron forge in Joburg. Men like him helped make South Africa, especially Joburg, and remember he was an "uitlander". After that we were rooineks, and the soutpiels etc etc and my Dad finally left SA because he was sick of Afrikaners always getting the best promotions.... sound familiar? Although I was born in the Eastern Transvaal I "grew up" in Observatory in Cape Town- a grey area with coloureds and whites. I spoke Afrikaans mostly and we never thought much about race issues. On visiting Pretoria I spoke Afrikaans and they looked in disbelief "jy praat Afrikaans soos 'n klonk tjommie". I had a coloured accent!

I think this is a great observation of how complex and complicated our society is and everything you say is true.

The country is absolutely beautiful.

The inhabitants are the problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, this is true!! Apart for 'Men like him helped make South Africa'. No they didn't, God MADE South Africa.
most of Africa had nowhere near the amount of problems during the imperialistic eras
I agree. People always think of race differences as a difference between blacks and whites, but it's more than that. My mom is Afrikaans and married my dad who is South African english. This didn't go down well in the Afrikaans community in her area. There is a divide in alot of aspects of South Africa, but it's not fair to say that all South Africans are a problem! No one was innocent in south africa. The Boers did bad things but then so did the british... remember the Boer war and the concentration camps where the british put the boer people, women and children. Many died in those camps.
i would have gave you an answer, but it was too much to read!
Not everyone is like those mentioned in your Novel above.

Best you can do is:
1.Leave the past in the past and carry on trying to make the future a better place!

2. Get bitter and twisted, throwing pity parties for yourself and attack people you hardly know.

Option one is really more fun though!
Ja at the end of the day it is a nation that build a country. But what do you expect? We can't stand together, you get people like Alf and Ayiza, I mean try to put them in one room, a total disaster!

It is a pitty people are like what you've mentioned, but at the end of the day, that's life we can't change!
