Slavery.......! What about the Arabs? |
Travel Info I just read a book about slavery and I tell you what everyone comes out of it a bit badly. The interesting thing is that big white colonial powers get the blame for slavery but it seems like the Arabs were the biggest slavers in Africa and began the slave trade, first with other African tribes and then with the Portuguese and Spanish, followed by the French, Dutch and British afterwards. The British abolished slavery and often hunted down Arab slavers in places like Sudan. I think that all Africans are either guilty of coercion (lekker word eh?) or indifference until it was too late. Travel Tips Pointing out the Arab slavers does not absolve the European slavers but it is interesting to note that the Arab slavers never get the same kind of flak that the white slavers do. When colonialism and slavery is discussed, its always the Europeans at whom the fingers are pointed, never the Arab or African slavers. Just like the whole Amistad issue. The movie just showed the poor slaves and the guy who led their revolt, it never shows that that same guy became a slaver himself. Others The Arabs killed more slaves than the White colonial powers put together. But thats no excuse is it when only 1.5 million died?. Arab involvement in the African slave trade has been well documented. And what about all the African Chiefs who sold their own people to the slavers ? Is that your coercion ? Slavery sucks. Factual or not, your question smacks of propaganda aimed at the Arabs, possibly for no other reason than to inflame hatred, between them and the rest of the world. Shame on you. Slavery is appalling regardless of who does it! We can't change the past but we can sure as heck keep it from happening these days! Slaves to Love being the only exception. |
