Travel Tips
In 1996-1997 I attended college in that general area (Jacksonville, IL, 45 mi north.) Many of my fellow students were from Alton.

Alton is a nice, quiet, sedate and picturesque river-town north of St. Louis. It is a bit podunk.

It suffers from the same midwest weather as elswhere. Summers can be hot and humid. Winters can be cold and snowy. It is a part of tornado alley. It is on the river so it can flood, but there are levees and such in place. Source(s): Personal Experience.

Other Travel Tips
Alton is a pretty small town just outside of St. Louis. Its economy was recently revived by the Alton Belle, a gaming boat owned by Argosy. Aside from the Alton Belle (now called the Argosy Casino), it's an unremarkable small riverfront town.

There's about 30,000 people in Alton today. You might be able to find more information on the city's official website, listed below.

Alton is far from crime-free, but it's no East St Louis. I'd say they have a low-to-moderate income level, lower middle class. Alton is right on the river, so I'm sure they have a lot of environmental issues. The town is known for the eagles that come there every year. Not sure if they've ever had any "calamities", maybe the occasional tornado just like every other midwest town and maybe some rock slides. (The town is on a major slope close to the river.)
Maybe these websites will help.

Alton, Il. is thirty minutes from St. Louis. It is a hilly town and has less criminal activity than St. Louis. I have enjoyed Alton every time I go there. Natural calamities could include the touchdown of a rare tornado. I live in the area and have never seen a tornado myself. Alton is a very clean town and has beautiful homes. You will be close to Universities and Medical Centers. Enjoy your shift.
