How do you get around in St. Louis?

I'm thinking about taking the train to St Louis...I've never been there before. Will there be taxis just hanging out at the Amtrak station waiting to take me to my hotel? How do you get around in St Louis without a car? I know they have the metro thing, but is it practical to take a suitcase on it? Is it safe to walk?

If you want to stay in downtown St. Louis then a cab can take you to your hotel. There aren't as many cabs as in most cities...but there are some. Downtown you can see alot of touristy things (The Arch, a ballgame?, Union Station, etc). These are generally in walking distance from most hotels (and most hotels have shuttles as well). But it is safe to walk downtown!

The MetroLink IS safe (mainly tourists use it) and you can bring suitcases on it because it is never very crowded! Source(s): Me...I live here.

My wife and I were in St Louis just this past week for three days.

There will be a cab to take you anywhere you need to go -- especially at Amtrack.

The downtown area is small enough to be able to walk -- and it isn't dangerous. People are strolling around most anywhere. Like anywhere else -- I wouldn't venture off down some dark alley or street alone. But stay close among the other people and you will be fine.
Rent a car, be careful where you walk and don't take metro link across the river, they will steal you bag. Buy a ticket to get on the train, I just paid a 120 dollar fine for not buying a 1.50 ticket.

It is very safe to take luggage onto the MetroLink. I live in Illinois and travel to the St. Louis airport (always toting luggage) via Metro Link. I've never had problems, always feel safe, and I hope you enjoy St. Louis!
