What is the traffic like in St Louis?

Travel Info
We're moving to St Louis and would like to know what its like there.

Travel Tips
We've basically got five highways for getting around town. Hwy 270, which connects to hwys 55, 44, 70, and 170.
170, also called the Interbelt, connects 270, 70, and 40. Traffic there is never too bad, except right now around the Page exit where they're doing construction. 70 between the airport and downtown is my least favorite hwy because it has narrow lanes and twists and turns all over the place. 40 was never too bad except at rush hours, of course, but everyone I know is planning on avoiding it like the plague until after the construction is done. I can't tell you about 44 and 55 because I live in North County and never get down there.

The great thing about driving in St Louis is there are lots of back ways to get places. Get yourself a Street Guide at any Walgreen's or QT - they're terrific. Its how my Georgia native husband learned his way around town, and he can get places better than even I can, who grew up here.

St Louis in general is a great place to live. I've lived in Georgia, Louisiana, and Illinois, but I missed St. Louis and came back. Get ready for great food (especially on the Hill and the Landing), lots to do for kids and adults, and pretty friendly people.

Three things I missed when I didn't live in St. Louis:
Toasted Ravioli , Gooey Butter Cake, real St Louis pizza
The free Zoo
Grocery shopping at Schnuck's

Oh, and don't worry when most natives ask where you went to high school - its just a St. Louis thing.

Traffic really isn't too bad anytime here. I guess it really depends on where you are moving from. Someplace like Chicago or LA would look at our traffic like it was nothing. If you are coming from a rural area, you may think it is pretty bad. Your big traffic times are around 7am and 5pm. Evening traffic tends to be heavier than morning traffic. For the most part, a normal trip down one of the main highways that would normally take you about 15 minutes during no traffic will take about 30-40 minutes during high traffic times. Take care and welcome to the Lou!
DONT MOVE HERE its a uptight, unfriendly, judgemental place..i cant wait to move the #$%^ out of here.......
In general the traffic is not bad. However, they are starting on a two year project to rebuild hwy 40 / I - 64. If you will be using that road to get to work it will be a problem.
heidi h is a dope....we can't wait for her to get her trailer out of town!

Like everyone else has said, Traffic is not bad here at all. Although within the year they will be closing Hwy 64 for major repairs, which goes through the city. All the arterial streets will be heavily used and it may be a bit crazy for a few years.
