Travel Info Do people from Saint Louis have their own unique accent like people from New York or Boston do? Travel Tips Pretty much what everyone else said. There's a little bit of the whole "forty-four" --> "fahrty-far" thing where vowels seem kind of [sharp?], but yeah, that seems more like a general midwestern thing than anything local, not too far removed from the stereotypical Chi-cahhh-go accent. Kind of nasal, I think. I would guess that my accent is pretty "general U.S.," but I've had people tell me before that I have a midwestern accent. Others no, st louisans dont have accents.... in southern mo people do st.louis doesn't have one predominant accent but if you go to st.louis you will be able to notice an accent that has merged from southern to suburban accents. I live in STL and no, I don't really have an accent. Some people here do, like when they say here, they say it "her" or there "ther'"Also with our u's, not all, but some people slur them sometimes. Like if I said "What's up" it would sound like "What's erp"Overall though, we don't have an accent down here. Every city has there own style, we're just so used to it that we don't notice. <3 GO CARDS!!! Well, if you think about it, everyone has an accent. One thing St. Louisans are famous for is our pronounciation of the word "wash" ("warsh"). We're also known for our pronounciation of words with the "or" sound ("forty-four" = "fardy-far"), There are other little distinctions, but these are the big ones. Edit: Supposedly, these patterns are less prevalent in younger people (younger than fortysomething). The natural St. Louis area residents have the least amount of inflection or accent in their voices. The "Fardy Far" is just more a running joke at this point. I do not know anyone that uses that in actual conversation ( unless in jest). I have read some reports that show more and more on air personalities are coming from St. Louis area because of the lack of accent. |
