Is Missouri a nice place to live in?? And is discrimination tough in there? |
Travel Info We are planning to transfer there and i'm very nervous if people there discriminate people from other countrys. Travel Tips I love the city of St Louis. It is a nice place to live and there is always something to do! Don't worry about what other people think or else you won't survive the city!!! LOL Others Missouri is a great place to live. I am not so fond of the big cities like Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, etc., but the rural areas are good with wonderful people. And, no I don't think you would be discriminated against. There is racial discrimination and the city is spatially segregated but it is not parochial-- you don't have to be from there to have friends. I live in Missouri and I like it. I do not find people her to be discriminating. There are some reallly nice places to live. St. Louis and KC City are your major cities. They both are nice, have some great suburbs with good schools. They also have a lot to offer, both of their downtowns are making a come back, they both have baseball teams, and football teams. In both cities you can a get a nice house, we have some of the cheapest cost of living around! There are also several places that you can take weekend trips to, we have some great drives here in the state. They also have some great zoos, musuems and places to shop. www.explorestlouis.com www.visitkc.com If you are looking for something a little smaller but, still has some of the amenties of the larger cities try Springfield and Columbia. Both are college towns so there is plenty to do, but are away from the larger cities and have a sort of country feel to them. Springfield is great they have a really nice zoo, and some very good schools. The job market there is also pretty good. They have a lot of historic homes there and Route 66 goes right through it. They have some great places to eat and plenty of places for your family to stay when they are in town. Springfield is also near Lake of the Ozarks and Branson which are nice weekend getaways. Speaking of that the Lake of the Ozarks is nice to live, in the country gets over runned with tourist during spring break and summer. More expensive to live here, property is high. Branson is just a big tourist center not very friendly to locals would not recommend living here, visit okay live um no. Another nice town is Joplin MO, it is smaller than all of the above but a really nice place to live. Has the old country charm. There are some nice places to eat and of course they have things like movie theaters, bars, resturants, grocery stores ect....They also have some very cool little places to shop and strolling in old town is always nice. Good place for a family, nice schools. Check out this site to see everything they have, a little undiscovered gem here in MO. http://www.joplincvb.com/ Also if Washington MO is very nice! Out in the country small town, people are very friendly here. Not much in the way of jobs but, they have some great places to go and shop. There is also a ton of outdoor stuff to do and the schools are really good. Here is their site for more: www.washmo.org Up north there is Hannibel MO, home of Mark Twain. Very nice place near Mark Twain lake. Smaller country town, however there is a Wal-mart and places like that. Beautiful country up there. Again there is a ton of outdoor stuff to do. Small quiet river town. I love Hannibel. They also have tons of town events each year....always some kind of festival going on. People are super nice here. www.visithannibal.com/ Well I hope this helps you, I would contact the visitors center for each city and get their free location packet. It has stats on housing cost, job markets, crime, schools ect.....This is very helpful when moving to a new city. I have used this service many times, also gives you some idea what the city is really like! People here really are nice, sure we have some mean ones, but every state does. I really like it here just remember our weather is a little crazy and we are in Tornado Alley so we do get them. Know what to do before you move! Good luck and congrats on your move! Live here It is a beautiful place to live, but I am not so sure about the labor laws they have there. I would check them out before you actually move there. I heard they were bad. I grew up in a small town about 50 miles south of St. Louis. I think the area is great. There are a few pros and cons. I've listed the most important. The larger cities (St. Louis and Kansas City) have a more racially diverse population than the rural and suburban areas. However, the schools tend to be better when you go further outside of the cities. Crime rate is fairly low. There are concentrated areas of high crime in North St. Louis. I don't know about Kansas City. The cost of living is fairly low compared to other larger cities. However, home prices are higher than in the southern states. There is little public transportation outside of the St. Louis area. They are working to extend the public railway system to the outlying areas, but many communities are not yet connected. The southern part of the state (and some rural areas to the north) are not very racially diverse. You may run into some discrimination there. College towns like Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Columbia are more diverse. Missouri does have a state income tax. I know some other states don't, so you might want to figure that into your cost of living. For the most part, Missouri is a great place to relocate to. There are a lot of inexpensive and free things to do, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. It has a beautiful countryside too. You (and your family) should have little trouble getting adjusted. Good luck! And welcome to the Show-Me State! |
