Why do Cardiff and Swansea fans have such bitter rivalry?

All the local derby's in England seem to be like a boy scouts outing in comparison to the absolute hatred that exists between many of their fans.

Only Southampton v Portsmouth registers anywhere near it's intensity in my experience.

Is this something to do with Dock towns being rough, or do Welsh people generally just like a good ruck?
