Travel Tips
First of all it depends when you would like to go.

Airfares to Australia cost about 拢700 in off seaon and up to 拢1200 around Christmas. It is cheaper to fly into Perth because it is 5 hours closer to London than the East Coast (Sydney and Brisbane), and while Perth is beautiful, it will cost you about $A500 (拢200) to get to the East Coast by plane. Unless you are very keen, I would not recommend driving, for people who are not used to long drives in desert, the outback can be a bit dangerous and there is not always passers by/mobile phone reception to get you out! Also it will take up almost a whole day flying form perth to the East Coast so if time is an issue (as beutiful as perth is) I would probably stick to the East Coast.
You can pick up a van in the backpackers market in King Cross in Sydney for about $A3000 (拢1200) that will come with camping equiptment/kitchen equiptment, usually maps and loads of other nicknacks that backpackers before you have picked up allong the way, then I would drive up the east coast to at least Cairns, if not further. Take your time, stay a couple days at each place. Buying the van will save you lots of money as you will not have to stay in Hostels all the time - although when you are in the major cities, it is a good idea to stay in a hostel close to the action, but when you are travelling up the coast you can stay (in the comfort of your van) in very cheap camping sites, also having the cooking facilities onboard can save you a lot of money, going supermarket shopping rather than eating takeout all the time. This could get your basic costs down to about $A40 (拢20) a day, even cheaper if you have a couple of you going, or chat to people in your hostel in sydney, a lot of backpackers are looking to do the same thing.
If you go up to Cairns you have to do some snorkelling on the great barrier reef, a good tour will cost you about $A150 (拢70) and they will take out out to the reef, give your snorkelling gear and most likely include lunch. I'd say if you budget for 拢40 a day for food/camping/fuel you will be fine! If you are going to go all the way to Australia I would go for at least 1 month, longer if possible!
Oh, and the best thing about buying a camper is that at the end you can take it back to the market in kingscross and pass it on, if you are mechanically inclined and buuy one that is a bit cheaper and do some work on it, you may even be able to make a small profit! but most people I know sell their for about $A400 less than they bought it for (拢170) alternatively if you are not mechanically inclined and want a more reliable vehicle, you can hire relaly cheap camper vans from wickedcampers -- i think they are about $A50 a day, but they are very reliable and have 24hour break down assistance, plus you are assured that all the stuff will work properly, and it is possible to drop the van in a different city from where you pick it up!

I think thats about all the information i can think of off the top of my head!

you may want to check out webjet.com.au for cheap internal flights in OZ and hostelworld.com for cheap backpackers places.

Goodluck with the saving and I hope you have a blast!

OH, one more thing, you can get much cheaper fares if you travel with someone else (these are companion fares) so if you are not planning to go over with someone, try asking if anyone wants to go to OZ at the same time as you on a community site like gumtree.com (in the travel partners section) it could save you about 拢100-拢100 each on airfares!

happy travels!

Where does sidney live?
The great thing is pounds are worth more then the Australian dollar. You will need around $100AUD a day for food and accommodation. So depending on how long you want to save for will depend on how long you want to come here for. Travel here is cheap especially by train or bus.

Maybe check out YMCA and see where they are located across Australia, it is definitely the cheapest accommodation.

Also http://www.countrylink.com.au this is our interstate train service.

Good luck!
Sydney is fantastic especially if your young, there is so much to do and see and the nightlife is fantastic, some really good budget hotels and hostels their too and very clean, spend a few days there ourselves recently and went round the budget hotels and hostels for ideas for our nephew who goes out to Sydney in a few months, some good cafes and restaurants that do brilliant meals at really cheap prices too, its a wonderful place and if I were younger and emigrating to Australia then Sydney is the place I would settle, have a great trip.
