Travel Tips
You probably won't see kangaroos "hopping around" but you will probably see some in the distance. But after a while, roos are roos, nothing exciting.

The trip is scenic but that depends on what you calssified as "scenic". If you are after grand panorama of waterfalls and view form the top of the mountain, then NO. But you will get to see Canberra - the Nation's capital. You will also see some historic country towns like Goulburn and Junee and Wangaratta. If you stop at these places during the day time then you get a chance to experience real Aussie country towns. You will see a lot of highway but along the way you will see the vastness of the country, hills and mountains along the way. Oh yeah, and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of sheep.

I've traveled to Syd from Melb instead by road, on 2 separate occasions. One was with the 12 hour in a row bus and the other was a road trip, took 2 days to get there. The later one was better as we get to stop by locally and explore the area. The 12 hour one was just alright.Don't expect too much cos it's along the main road.Well, personally I wasn't too impressed cos I've seen better sceneries than that. But if I were you, I'd just take the 1w hour night bus cos if u really want to enjoy sceneries ,it's better to do it slowly rather than expecting too much from a 12 hour bus ride.
The scenery from Sydney to Melbourne doesn't, vary much along the Hume hwy, can become a little monotonous. If you to go via the Princess hwy, well that's another thing. You hug a lot of the coast line and see some spectacular sights. The Princess would add at least 2 or 3 hours on your traveling time, and the roads are not designed for large tourist vehicles, but that's definitely the way to go.

Enjoy your stay.
As the others have said the view between Syd and Mel isn't too engrossing if you're on a bus. The itinerary you have listed is via the Hume Highway, which is just farms, sheep, a few houses, the odd country town etc. It's just a highway, what can I say, and fairly flat. You might see the odd kangaroo through the trees at certain points of the trip but you'll have to look quick - but the bus will be hiking it so don't expect it to slow down to give you a look or anything. Most wild animals stay away from the roads.

If you are expecting moutains, rivers, oceans or spectacular scenery like the Rocky Mountains or anything you'll be disappointed.

Any reason why you have to take the bus? It's just as cheap to fly and much faster (and certainly more comfortable than trying to curl up on a bus).

I used to coach around years ago when the buses were much cheaper than planes but nowadays the fares are just as competitve and flying is much more convenient.

Look up Jetstar and VirginBlue - their discount fares start from about AUD$70 - $90 one way. Qantas is a little more expensive.
im australian aged 71.
take the night bus.
Sydney - Major City
Liverpool - Suburb of Sydney. Nothing important
goulborn - Awesome tea houses with Devonshire tea (scones) Huge sheep there take a photo of (statue)
Canberra - Capital of Australia. Go see the Parliament house (old and new) the art gallery (fantastic) Australian Mint (make your own money)
junee - cool town
wagga wagga - there is a dog on the tucker box (major Australian song & poem)
albury (border of NSW & VIC) murry river. Cool house boats
wangaratta
seymour - crappy suburb in melbourne. Not much too see.
broadmeadows - STAY ON THE BUS! rough area. Open your legs and your be pregnant!
Melbourne international airport (you better see good ol' melbourne before leaving. Melbourne is the best city in Australia.

May see kangaroos but mainly cows and sheep and very dry arrid farmland. We are in a drought.
