What are the best day trips from Sydney?

Travel Info
We will be staying in Sydney (Hyde Park) this October and wondered if anyone can recommend some interesting days out? Would probably use boat, train or coach rather than car hire?
Cheers
Rich

Travel Tips
For a good day out:
Go to the Blue Mountains. Make two trips, one to Katoomba and the other to the Jenolan Caves or combine the two.
Take a tour of the wineries in the Hunter Valley.
Go to Mudgee for more wineries and interesting food places.
Go to the Southern Highlands around Mittagong/Bowral/Picton for some history, antiques and great scenery.
Take a trip down the south coast south of Nowra. It is beautiful down there.

All these places are well served by coach companies. Collect some brochures from your hotel or any travel agent and choose the ones that suit you.
Others
Check with public transport providers on what "day tickets" or even weekly tickets are available as public transport in Sydney can be expensive.

I suggest the following:

A day or two in the Blue Mountains;
A day out on the harbour;
A ferry trip across the harbour to Manly;
Chinatown - great chinese restaurants;

I'm sure others will come along with lots more suggestions.

Enjoy your trip.
My nephew has been Melbourne for the last six months now.And is due home in two weeks time.In Sydney he climb Sydney Harbour Bridger.And visited lots of places.And has enjoyed his time there.
Do a day trip to the Blue Mountains as the views are spectacular. You will also get to go on the Blue Mountain railway or/and cable car. The cable car has a glass bottom so the views are stunning.

Go and see centre-point tower and post a postcard from the highest postbox in the southern hemisphere!

Do a ferry trip to manly and also see bondi beach.

Do some shopping in the fab malls.

Do the harbour bridge climb (Twilight is best as you see dusk and daylight)

Do a harbour lunchtime cruise. Food is fab and also ideal photo opportunities.
been there done that...loved it
Do what I did - go down to Circular Quay and just catch the next ferry that's leaving. It really doesn't matter where it's going to as such, as it's just a cheap way to get to see that gorgeous city from the water.

You should also go up to the Blue Mountains. I believe there are direct trains from Sydney. Alight at Katoomba. The view from the observation post will take your breath away.

If you do decide to hire a car, you MUST drive up to the northern beaches. You'll see why when you get there.

Hope this helps.
