Why are the flags half mast today on the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

Travel Tips
The flags are half mast in Canberra today, as well.

I was confused also but have just discovered that they are in recognition/respect of the Samoan King, Malietoa Tanumafili the second, who died in a hospital in Apia on May 11 aged 94. He led Samoa since it achieved independence in 1962.

He was one of two high chiefs jointly appointed to lead Samoa on independence in 1962.

His funeral was held today. Australia's Governor General attended. Source(s): the internet.
