Where in US has similar cost of living to Sydney, Australia?

Travel Info
I am looking for advice from business people or people who have lived and worked in both Sydney, Australia and in the US. I would like to know where in the US has a similar cost of living to Sydney (i.e. wages, housing, etc.) Thanks!

Travel Tips
I would say if you are comparing the cost of living in Sydney's city or Eastern suburbs then cost of living is equal to Manhattan. I found it slightly cheaper to shop in NYC then I do in Sydney. Clothes, food and restaurants are cheaper in NYC.

Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live.

We lived in Rose Bay (East) and were paying almost $500AUD for a 2 bedroom apartment with external laundry.

Manhattan for $500USD which is more then AUD but if you are earning USD in wages it is all relative you would get about the same.

I have lived in Los Angeles and Sydney.

Sydney is more expensive than Los Angeles.... you could prob compare Sydney prices to New York or Honolulu....
I lived in Sydney CBD (Cicular Quay) for the past two years and grew up in Southern California and have an apartment on the West side of Manhattan next to the Park (central park). Sydney is economically as close to Manhattan in New York City or the city of San Francisco (which is the most expensive in the USA, second is NYC, but not by much!)

Southern California, in perticular San Diego, is definitely closest to living in Sydney Australia because the weather is very similar and the people are just as laid back. Los Angeles is not as laid back as San Diego, that is why I feel San Diego is the closest to Sydney in that aspect. Also, San Diego is not as expensive as Sydney or LA.

The city of San Diego is similar to Sydney CBD, the surf and beaches are also very similar because it is a big part of the culture, and ofcourse the people are cool and laid back just like in Sydney.
I've been living in Honolulu, and recently went home (Sydney) for a visit. I was shocked at the prices of things like clothes and food. However when living and working there, things seemed to be more in balance. I had a poorly paying job in the US, and a better salary in Australia. The hardest part about relocating internationally is having your training, skills, education and experience recognised in your new home town.
