Isps in australia (NSW SYDNEY) a few questions? |
Travel Info hey i'm goin to australia for two month i have a portable with a v92 modem i'm looking for the fastest internet service i could get for a reasonable price around $$ 40 -50 + setup anyway we have a phone line there but i'm not sure whether its optus or telestra plz provide any details + a review if you have personally tried it is there such a thing where u buy a small external reciever or modem or something like that and then youcan have internet access all around the city how much wuold such a thing cost what can i do to download free music of the net without getting in trouble MANY THANKS Travel Tips Hi there There is a great site http://whirlpool.net.au/ where you can put in your location and requirements and it will compare all the available options for you. There are a lot of good ones out here, and in Sydney you have probably the largest variety to choose from (I'm in a regional area outside Sydney, so my pricing etc will be different) General tip - avoid Telstra like the plague. I've had a few run ins with them and their service is poor, cost is high, just not worth it. You'll see that from the whirlpool site, though. Yes, there are wireless networks in Sydney, and there are also lots of hotspots around the city. Again, check whirlpool and look specifically for wireless networks. With your phone line, it doesn't really matter who the phone is billed through. All the lines are owned by Telstra anyway, and then the billing comes through any one of a number of companies. Some will give you a discount if you have phone and internet with the same company, but that doesn't always mean you get the best deal, so it pays to shop around a bit. Enjoy your trip! Others try telstra.com.au - for further information on the price of setting up your connection to internet broadband or dial up fees go on your first bill with broadband they will provide you with a modem to set up - may take a few wks to set up - with dial up - be slower but you will be able to set up as soon as you phone them. cheers! Absolutely agree with the other answer about avoiding telstra - overpriced with tiny download limits and bad speeds for what they expect you to pay. the whirlpool site is excellent to check out, it includes smaller isps that you otherwise might not get to check out. you can also buy internet access the same way you buy phone calling cards if you have your own modem. Its a slightly more expensive way of doing it, but there are no set up fees, no contracts and you just buy a few hours at a time as you need it. Telstra are great never had any hassles with them, go to www.bigpond.com and it will give you the info you need. Mr Cool, if you already have broadband setup, where ever you are(no one ever says where they are), you just tap into your provider network and access your account from a internet cafe. I dont think internet providers will connect you up for 2 months. In fact they wont!! I think if you are coming for a holiday, its best to see Australia, not a screen. |
