On his first voayage, Captain Cook reached the southeastern coast of the Australian continent on 19 April 1770, and in doing so his expedition became the first recorded Europeans to have encountered its eastern coastline. On April 29, Cook and crew made their first landfall on the continent, at a place now known as Kurnell, which he named Botany Bay after the unique specimens retrieved by the botanists. when he arrived there was NO Sydney

Cook didn't go to where Sydney now is. In 1770 he landed in Botany Bay which is south of Sydney. Sailing north, he saw Sydney Heads and remarked that there seemed to be a good harbour behind but he didn't sail into Sydney Harbour.

The First Fleet landed in Botany Bay but Governor Phillip found it unsuitable. He sent a boat north to explore the harbour Cook had mentioned and they found fresh water in the Tank Stream so the colony was moved there. The Tank Stream enters the harbour at Circular Quay but it now runs underground through sewer pipes.
Lieutenant James Cook did the job. He was promoted later.
Captain James Cook landed at Kurnell Beach on 19 April, 1770. Kurnell is a peninsula located north of Cronulla on Botany Bay, and there is a memorial located there.

I should know. I lived in Cronulla.
