Beach in Sydney... is it ok to let your bag on the sand when U're in the sea?

Travel Tips
Hi Gina
What a cute name. I have lived in Sydney all my life and sadly the times when we could leave our belongings safe in public areas is long gone. Predatory thieves hang out in the inner city beached such as Bondi, Manly, Tamaramma, Coogee & Cronulla. The latter now being famous by the race riots that occured a year ago.

If you must leave something on the beach AND YOU ARE ALONE then follow these simple rules:

1. If you can leave it in your room, hostel or car then leave it there.

2. Only bring a key and some change to get back to where you are staying.

3. If these items to go missing report it to one of the Surf Life Savers (volunteers who patrol every beach) and they will be more than happy to assist you.

And remember, most Aussies are great people and we welcome all visitors. All we ask is that you have a great time and dont expect to see kangaroos runing down the streets of Sydney because that has never happened.

Others
if you are on your own, then I think probably not a good idea to leave your bag alone. But I think since Sydney is a good place, it should be OK with it.

Better idea it to use the locker they provide, that would be safe. Or get a friend go with you.
Awesome folks here. Nothing to worry about. All come to enjoy sands, surf and the sun.

Camera ? They will throw one into your bag - another camera made in Australia!

If you happen to be in a very busy beach, you can use private lockers if they exist or always ask the one next to you to keep an eye on your camera.

If your camera is water-proof, then surf with it!
Personal Experience : Was in Bondi Beach in 1997, loved it to the max.
It used to be alright to leave your belongings on the beach covered with your towel. It is not the case these days though. You should rent one of the lockers at the beach and pin the key to the inside of your swimmers. Make sure you take a safety pin with you to the beach in case they don't provide one.
Beach Baby
I live in Sydney. I leave sunscreen, a hat, a T-shirt, my towel and my car keys on the beach when I swim, and nothing else. Australia is not crime free, and criminals like easy targets.
