I beleive any kind of Visa to Oz will take about 2 months- you have to fax all kinds of paperwork and there is a lot of red tape. I applied for a work visa and it took about that long...2 1/2. As far as a return ticket. My fiance went over with a student visa and did not require a return. This is probably because as a student your dates may change.

Also, I'd check out Manly Beach.... it's beautiful.
