Flying my dog to australia? |
Travel Info my dog is going to emigrate to australia with us. where do i finf out about geting him boked on th flight, andwhat does it entail?? Travel Tips my husband and i moved to australia for a year with our 1 year old son -- we took our two dogs and one cat with us and let me say, the most complicated thing we did was get our animals ready to move with us. we tried to do all the paperwork ourselves, but found it impossible. you can't even book your pet on a flight yourself, you have to go through a pet transport company that specializes in this type of thing. we used this company: http://www.iptlax.com/?.home=ytff... and they were great! they specialize in australia and new zealand. they will complete the whole process from start to finish. if you live anywhere outside of LA (we were in SF) your dog will have to fly to LA and spend the night there, and then fly to australia, there are restrictions on how many hours an animal can be on a plane. they will pick your pet up and provide a place for them to stay and then take them to the la airport for their flight to australia. your dog will be subject to a minimum quaranteen time of 30 days, or up to as much as 6 months. to avoid the 6 months, you must start the paperwork, vaccination process at least 6 months before your departure. we couldn't bear to keep our pets in quaranteen for more than 30 days, so, we luckily started the process early enough. once they land in sydney, they will be transported to the Eastern Creek Quarantine Station by a gov't employee. http://www.dpie.gov.au/content/output.cf... you can visit them during visiting hours for the month they are in quarantine. though, it's a bit sad leaving them after your visit -- they get pretty upset, as you can imagine. anyway, again i would strongly advise just letting one of the pet transport companies do it all for you. it is well worth the expense and basically impossible to do without assistance. Others Your vet will have all the details. Dont forget his passport, microchip and rabies jabs well beforehand. he will need to be fully vaccinated, microchipped, flea tx applied 48hrs before departure, u need to get a crate for him, the airline may be able to help u with this, not sure as u may need a rabies vaccine, once all that is sorted u will get a pet passport Talk to your airline about making travel arrangements. It is more than likely you will have to quarantine your dog for some time when he/she arrives. I bet the post is cheaper get a new one when you get here, chances are your dog is used to UK weather and the heat in oz (depending where in Oz youre going) will probably knock it around. you need to talk to your travel agent,as some airlines do not take live cargo. You will also need to talk to your vet as the dog will have to have it's full vaccination shots, and must be microchiped.Your dog will have to spend time in quarantine, and depending on which country your dog is leaving from, can depend on how long it stays in quarantine(usually around6 weeks in most cases). You are able to visit your dog as often you like when it's in quarantine.Hope every thing works out for you. |
