A lot of young backpackers pay for their trip around Australia by following the fruit and vegetable picking circuit (the Harvest Trail). There are increasing numbers of unskilled jobs available in Asutralia, so if your prepared to clean, serve, scrub and do generally less pleasant and less skilled work, you probably won't have too much trouble getting a job. The pay won't be huge, but it's generally at award rates and, if you spend it sensibly, will pay your costs and a reasonable social life and get you to your next place. Others (I'm an Aussie) - Finding casual work in Australia can be very hard. There is large unemployment, you have to compete with young adults/teenagers, single mothers, working mothers, unemployed and uneducated need casual work too... So.. yes it's hard, you need to go through a job agency making it harder, so you can't work without a work visa etc and if you do you can be deported or abused by your employer (Since your working illegally). - An English friend of mine worked illegally as a nanny in Australia, her female boss didn't pay her - stating I will only pay you if you sleep with me. She didn't get paid and nothing could be done because she would have been deported. (Last year) Be careful. |
