Moving to Sydney from Ireland - which suburbs to look at? |
Travel Info I will be moving in march next year and was wondering what are the best suburbs with regard to proximity to the city and reasonable price? Travel Tips some questions: do you want the beach experience? Coogee / randwick (eastern suburbs) is resonably priced and full of irish and english people. Its about 1/2 bus ride in peak hour - pretty close to the city. Manly (north shore)is reasonable, and you would catch a ferry to the city every day (yay!15 minutes ride) but the ferry is pretty expensive. Funky uni vibe? Inner west. Glebe or newtown. Very cheap and very close to the city. vey cool too. Great resteraunts cafes etc. Gay scene? Inner eastern suburbs. Paddington / darlinghurst/the cross/surry hills. very close to the city, quite trendy, pretty expensive. next suburbs out of the city center Double income no kids with a dog funky villiage scene? Annandale / Balmain / Rozelle / paddington / . again 10 minutes from city Quiet family sort of scene? crowns nest, milsons point, north sydney, Artarmon - basically the lower north shore the "I'm stacked with cash" beverly hills set? woolhara, double bay, bellvue hill, mosman, balmoral, birchgrove That's my 10 second tour. That'll be 5 bucks please! Others It depends on what you're looking for, but around Enmore, Stanmore, St Peter's is pretty good as it is inner Western Suburbs, full of Uni students, Kings St is full of cheap places to eat, and you're about 2 train stops from Central Station. Plenty of group share places too. You can't beat the eastern suburbs for proximity to the city - unfortunately it can be a bit pricey. However, Randwick is still reasonable and it's probably about 15 - 20 minutes to the city. You could go to the north shore around Milsons point - it's not geographically distant but it's a mental distance. Those of us who live in the east tend to think anything over the harbour bridge is really far. However it's I think one train stop away. The other thing you might consider is trains vs buses. The eastern suburbs apart from edgecliff and bondi is only serviced by buses rather than trains. Trains to north shore down south and out west. Inner west like surry hills will also be close to the city - depending on where you live but surry hills is next to redfern which is a rather undesirable area so you need to figure out which side to the suburb to be on (you'll find out about redfern when you arrive). Edgecliff and bondi can be good areas in the east as they're on the train line. Finding a reasonably priced place there is possible but a bit harder. The further out west you go, you go down market and with that are associated rises in crime rates - inverse relationship with property prices. All the better areas are closer to the shore. I'm a Sydneysider born n bred. I lived in Sydney for 10 years moving from HK. It all depends upon your circumstances. Are you coming over single, Married, with kids etc. If you are moving with family and need good shopping, transport and schools then Epping is a good place. If coming alone and working in the city then Strathfield is equally good. If you are young and like to party a lot then around the city but accomodation will be expensive and you may not get what you want apart from the nightclubs and bars and restaurants. |
