Why is Australia called down under? |
Travel Info Why is Australia called down under? Travel Tips Because it has the greatest land mass 'down under' the equator line and is the lowest land mass also (bottom of the world) Others Because it's the only continent totally 'down under' the equator I think because in very early times people thought "that there must be some land mass on the other side of the earth" (down under) to keep the earth balanced. But maybe the first answer is also right. Hi, Just adding to the other post about being the only Continent completely below the equator. Is when you look at a map of the World its always drawn the same way, placing the South Pole below the North Pole. Making Australia look likes its below the USA for example. Since our planet hangs in space there is know up or down. It would be interesting to see a map of the world with Australia on top. Then we would be nicknamed (Up Above) not Down Under lol because it's the only continent south of the equator (or down under the equator) Just take a look at a map of the globe at that should give you an idea. If you draw a line from the northern hemisphere Australia and New Zealand are roughly under Europe and the America (down under). Antarctica is another continent which is wholly below the Equator Its down on the map...and under kinda from America! |
