What's Sydney Like?

Travel Info
Hi. Probably a million answers to my question I know, sorry but it really is that general. All of a sudden I feel like I wanna go and study in Sydney for a year. I'm originally from London. About to finish my undergrad degree in German & Media. I'm starting a postgrad teaching course in September (primary school) but maybe I'll go to Sydney after that...

I don't really know much about Sydney except what I've seen on TV. I've heard a lot about race riots and I'm mixed race, do you think that will be an issue?

But generally what's it like? Culture? Nightlife? Daylife? Urban/rural areas? I've lived in London, Oxford and Essen (Germany) so I'm really a city girl but obviously those three are all really different places. What's Sydney like from a native's point of view? Or anyone who's visited? Or stayed for a while?

Thanks :-D

Sydney is not a good place to live. If you want to checkout Australia and study here you should goto Melbourne.

There are a lot of problems here with certain people who roam around in gangs stiring up trouble for no reason and their actions contribute to the huge amounts of racial tension in our city. However it has nothing to do with black vs white the problem we have is with the Islamic and arab community.

Many tourists such as the one commenting above me think Sydney is all cool and safe but they never venture out to the real Sydney. They stay in the 'fake Sydney''.

The western suburbs are not leichardt or anything like that (those are inner city suburbs and are generally much safer).... try Blacktown or Penrith thats the real west when you go out that way you see the trouble and poverty... Go south & south west and you will see the racial tension places like Bankstown & Cronulla etc.

Downtown and inner-city suburbs are where the tourists go... basically none venture out any further and get to see the problems that we put up with here everyday.

Sydney universities are also substandard by international comparison. I would not study here try Monash or RMIT both in Melbourne. Also look at Bond in Queensland.

The nightlife is not that good. Melbourne has much more bars/clubs and they are very trendy and cosmopolitan. Alot of these wannabe thugs also try to infiltrate nightspots to stir up trouble. You just need to be careful.

sorry i which i can tell you .i would like to visit too sydney one day
basically during the day in summer everyone flocks to the beach and heads out to the city to party after 9pm. Cafes are the norm and there is really good coffee. The culture in Sydney is very diverse and will change on were you live. I am an eastern suburbs boy and have been living in Sydney for 15 years. If you need any more info let me know.
All Sydneysiders think its great the rest of Australia know the truth. They just can,t escape until they retire. Best of luck?
I am from the UK and live in Sydney. Imagine being on holiday in Spain (beach and cafe culture) and working in a very warm city, but then with the rules and regulations of the UK (ie. same driving rules, same prison system, same teaching setup) with a tinge of American lifestyle too. Thats Sydney.

There is a skills shortage for teachers, especially primary school teachers. If you are under 35, you can get a working visa for a year.

I think it is funny how I can find Helman's Mayo in Bondi, English Beans in all the supermarkets, Frost and Judge John Deed are on the telly sometimes. If you have lived in London, then you will be used to the big city living. Honest, there was some racial tension last year with the Cronulla riots, but this country is so multi-cultural, you will be absolutely fine over here. There is racial tension all over the World.

Well, the nightlife is fantastic. The food is unbelievable - Mexican, Lebanese, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Italian, Turkish food, and the list goes on and on. With regards to the areas, you don't really find 'bad suburbs' like you do in the UK - they are all ok, it depends on what type of lifestyle you want and how long you want to commute. I currently live at Malabar, the beach is 1 street away and Sydney is a 15 minute drive, but I am moving towards the Blue Mountains (Near Penrith). If you are a city girl, then there are always the Inner City Surburbs (Leichhardt, Glebe etc), where you can 'almost' walk into the city.

The only thing I can't do in Sydney is ski (that's a four/five hour drive).

Maybe its because I am new to Sydney that I like it here. But I thought you might like another English-person's perspective on Sydney. It is certainly not as rough as some of the places in the UK I have lived. Hope this helps.
