Best way for australian college student to call home to USA? |
Travel Info My sister is going to be attending college in Australia starting this July for the next 2 years. I was wondering what is the best way other than a calling card, to call from australia to America? We will probably be purchasing her a cell phone once she gets down there so are there any cell phone providers down there that are better than others or that offer discounted rates to America or anything. any information is appreciated. Travel Tips Use Yahoo Voice call! I am sure your sister will have Internet access somehow, at least colleges give Internet access to students. I am regular user of Yahoo voice call, and the sound quality is excellent! There are two types: PC to PC or PC to Phone. I use both. PC to PC is free, and the sound quality is as good, if not better, than calling cards. I use it to call some asian countries, and the quality is excellent. PC to Phone is good as well, but you have to pay. But it is cheap. Calling US is only 1cent per minute, and calling to Australia is only a little bit more. Cell phone providers are ok, and most of them have special rates to call US. But I am not a big fan of Mobile phone. There are always hidden cost here and there, and for two years, it is cheaper to setup an Internet connection then using solely mobile phone. But if mobile phone is the only option for her, then try Optus (Www.optus.com.au), or Telstra (telstra.com.au). Others How about instant messaging, would that work from Down Under?? we dont call them cell phones - we say mobile phones yes there is plenty of mobile phone providers and services telstra, optus, vodafone, red3, dodo, kooee just to name a few - log onto their websites telstra.com.au, optus.com.au, etc etc telstra is a major phone company here in australia ooo I dunno about using mobiles for international calls in the long term...It's better off to use a phone card with cheap rates, or using VOIP (voice over internet phone). For mobile service within Australia, there are quite a few choices, depending on how you want to use you phone. If your sister is a texter, then either Virgin or Optus is good. Vodafone used to have a really good deal called No Plan, but they've stopped selling it cos they'd lose money if more ppl signed up lol. Telstra offers the widest coverage across Australia, so if your sis is going to any country towns the Telstra 3G network is good. You can buy phone cards from most newsagents, 7/11, service stations etc. With phone cards rates are from about 1陆 垄 per minutes to around 3垄 a minute. My understanding is that you can use these cards with a cell (mobile) phone, but she may need to be on an Australia telephone carrier as those from overseas may not work. VOIP is also available so she could use a computer to connect with a phone in the USA. I would go with simple Guy's suggestion. download a pc to pc software and use it. I use skype and it's really good. why not the calling cards, when my son visited the US I would call him using these discount cards and it was endless: I think 3 cents a minute or so. i live in spain and use vonage through my internet connection. Check it out: www.vonage.com. I have a california based phone number and all land lines and cell phones are unlimited for 24 bucks a month. |
