How much salary should i get in taipei? I plan to bring my wife and baby there soon.? |
Travel Info cost estimates would help a lot (example: food, apartment, education, etc.). hope you could give me reasonable figures. thanks! Travel Tips Short answer: See the links below for actual going-rate info on renting places, shopping and other info on life in Taiwan. Long answer: It really depends, do you want to have the quality of life you find in the West (i.e. a bathtub, a house, at least one car), or are you willing to adjust to the way most Taiwanese live? If you want a more Western quality of life in Taipei (in a large, new apartment), you should plan to pay about 50 - 100,000 NT a month for rent and perhaps another 10 - 20,000 NT for electricity. If you plan to eat out each night, you should plan for 20,000 NT in food costs (assuming you eat only at Western or more formal restaurants) for you and your family. If you eat primarily at food stalls or smaller Taiwanese restaurants, you could cut that cost down to about 8,000 NT per month. Please note, if you are willing to live like a middle class Taiwanese family, you can conceivably cut these costs by about 20-40%, primarily by living in a smaller and older apartment (which will likely mean no bathtub, only a bathroom with a shower-hose), and perhaps only one or two rooms. As for education, I can't comment. If you want your children to have an American or other Western (English) education, that would have to be at a private school, which will be expensive. Good luck!! Below are some links that might help you. Source(s): This is a link to Tealit.com (Teaching English and Living In Taiwan), which is a great central storehouse for information (mostly for English speaking foreigners) on living and thriving in Taiwan. Good info even if you're not teaching!! http://www.tealit.com/ This is a link to housing ads (please scroll down to the section that says "Ad Categories"). http://www.tealit.com/ad_categories.php?... Here's a link to the Taipei American School, one of the more popular Western schools for Western children living in Taiwan. http://www.tas.edu.tw/default.asp?bhcp=1... Here is a link about buying things at stores in Taiwan. http://www.tealit.com/warehouses.htm... Other Travel Tips well, 10000 per month for food,1500 per semester for the school fee for your little one(that's public school, privates are like 45000 per semester, as for American schools? more.)50000per month for rent if you're living in a 100 square metre apartment in Taipei. And we'll add another10000 for other stuffs. that's 70000per month. but if you are eating at the markets or local restaurants(which means cheaper but dirtier. but the food might be more yummy) that'll be, I say, 7000. good luck you should be able to find an older 3 bedroom in the range of 14 000 NT to 25 000 NT. If you want a nice fully furnished place, out in a nice area of town with sidewalks and trees nearby thats when you get towards the range K was talking about. If you have a baby you are better off investing in a car and that means purchasing a parking spot. A car spot is generally an extra 2000 to 3000 NT a month added on. Usually you will pay extra for the security guard and cleaning lady if you are in an apartment building. That can be anywhere from an extra 1500 a month to 10000 extra a month depending on the luxery level of your place. if you are addicted to AC (and believe me you probably will become so) your bills will likely get above 5000NT a month and into the 10000 range. If you are hardy and you want to help save the earth from global warming its easily doable to just use electric fans and cut your costs. Education wise- it depends. I have yet to fully explore that question myself so I am interested in what other people find or use. At my school that I teach at we get a 50% discount for teachers children which makes a very expensive school manageable... normally if you go for a private bi-lingual school its probably about 120K to 160K for 3 months. (yipes!) If you don't mind your child learning nothing but Chinese and potentially losing English skills the public system is a good idea and investing in time and an homeschooling them yourself is a possibility. The internet opens up plenty of new opportunity for this kind of idea in the future- we probably will all be made unemployed by Skype in 10 years if the masses catch on. |
