What are the things that need to be aware of when travelling in Taipei? |
Travel Info What are the things that need to be aware of when travelling in Taipei? Travel Tips - The mosquitos are coming out in force, if you wear black material they will be attracted to you, if you wear lighter colours - it can help. - The traffic is always a nightmare as the Taiwanese drivers are famously inconsiderate towards perdestrians. When the traffic lights are red - if you cross you may get fined. When it's green for pedestrians the cars are allowed to push their way through at the same time - honking as they go. The scooter drivers prefer to use the side walk as apposed to the old fashioned and uncool roads that have been provided - this means that walking down the street is a little dangerous. - The crime rate is low, the streets are safe. There are a few pick-pockets and purse snatchers about, if you're wearing fashion designer stuff then you may get targeted - but again this is really rare. - You'll be fine, just watch the traffic and keep your hotel/hostel windows closed as mosquitos are terrible! Others bird flu disease, looters, peasants and terrorist. Beware of what you eat! If you don't know the language it will be hard to find food that you are familiar with. Jen, all of the above are correct, but I would like to add one or two other details: 1. Be careful of unruly drivers. Drivers here are not the most courteous in the world, and many break small traffic rules, like not stopping with the red light, or making a right turn when they're not supposed to. These are only some of the flagrant traffic violations that are VERY common here. In a week, we usually get three or four news about traffic accidents. Just two weeks ago, a child's head was crushed under the wheel of a kindergarten schoolbus. The parent who was with the child was at fault, but I think so was the driver. There are some drivers who just don't look out for other people here. 2. Having said that, the Taiwan urban streetscape is filled with scooters. When you get off a car/taxi, and before you open the door out wide, always remember to look behind to see if there are oncoming scooters/cars. This is for your safety , as well as for the safety of the scooter driver. What I consider most important: Look left , right and left again (Vice versa)when crossing roads especially if you are coming from a South East Asian Country. Many times you just look one side and see a clear road and step off, when the cars are actually coming from the other directions. Yup, I live in Taiwan and I would just like to agree with all the other answers. Petty crime and theft is minimal here. That is not to say it doesn't happen, but it is much safer than most places. You can walk around in most places at night and not worry, but you should still watch your back. And, be careful crossing the street, and the sidewalks. Scooters often drive on the wrong side of the road here, so look left, then right, then left again, and do this every time you cross a lane, or a line of cars. |
