Travel Info Do we need to bargain while shopping in taipei? If yes, how much lower? Travel Tips When shopping in Taipei especially in department stores or boutiques, there is really no need for bargaining. All the prices are labeled. It wouldn't hurt to ask if there are discounts or if any sales is coming up. Sometimes there are promotions if you charge your purchase to a credit card (VISA or Mastercard) where you could get a 5% discount or possibly a gift. You may bargain a little with the vendors at night/street markets or smaller shops, but not much though. Maybe 10-20% less at the most. If you are considering a larger purchase (greater than NT$3000) at a department store, bring your passport so you could get the form to get your 5% VAT refunded. Happy Shopping! Plus they are very honest and they won't try to rip you off either. =) do you need to bargain? no. but it's fun to do and you should definitely try it, because the vendors will cut you some slack. i'm no pro, but my relatives who live there does it all the time - you can even bargain in the department stores! the rule of thumb is: don't bargain unless you intend to buy. start off with "how much is this?" vendor: response: "what's the lowest price you can give me?" vendor: response "that's still a little pricey...can't you give me a lower price?" vendor may ask what you're willing to pay...you can generally begin to bargain at this point. i wasn't confident enough to bargain at the department stores because i was only visiting. but always, ALWAYS bargain at the markets! not so much for food, but for anything other than food - it's a market, you're supposed to bargain! and if they don't let you bargain...try the next booth/stall. While things are cheap in the Night Markets, Wufenpu e.t.c. you can ask for a discount especially if you buy more than one or two pcs at the same stall. However you will find many stalls already have their discounts written up i.e. One for NTD350/- Two for NTD600/- Three for NTD500/- usually if you are at a market the prices are labeled. you can sometimes wheedle out a discount but generally not much more than 10%-15% off in my experience. Generally the prices are already quite reasonable. |
