Has anyone ever taught English in Taiwan? |
Travel Info How was your experience? How long were you there, and did you use a recruiter? Travel Tips yes. I teach english here. initially it was very bad. (I blame the recruiter) i came in to the new school, I wont mention any names, but they hired 14 Canadians and took 4 for the new school, sent 4 to another town without telling us this possibility, and tried to sell off the other 6 to various other schools like we were meat. Without consulting us. So I told the SOB bastard of a 'boss' what I thought of them and quit, For some reason I stuck it out and went independant, got a job at another school, and took mandarin lessons and here I am almost seven years later and loving it. (most of the time-- i still have my black days -but it all goes away primarily due to my Taiwanese wife.) Culture shock will hit you very very hard and I don't blame anyone at all for leaving early. remember that normal people here are just looking for a way to make a living, just like us and that money talks BS walks. Ok, the bad news aside there is alot of cool things in Taiwan to see. I love that I can go to the beach in the morning, have tea at an amazing teahouse with indoor waterfalls for lunch, drive up to the mountains and look at fireflies or the city lights in the night if I so chose to (at least on my days off) Plus the location can't be beat for travelling around to various spots in Asia and for westerners in general with a good education, it is a very fun, affordable place to earn money and teaching experience. There is a lot of nasty things and (what we percieve as) dark elements openly exhibited in the culture, but overall I think the general attitude of tolerance for difference and openness towards vice allows for a somewhat healthier society that compares very favorably to GW Bush's version of a 'religious' (repressed psychopathic personality/ politically correct development) society that is modern America. Of course if you are from economically poorer countries than Taiwan, generally the attitude here is completely different than how they treat us Westerners, like night and day. Similar to Japan in that way... (from what I have heard) I regret using the recruitment services and recommend not getting involved with them. Often they cut the money you can earn by a sizable chunk because of a 'finders fee' when all they really do is scan the same ads on Tealit that you can do yourself. You really are better off coming in with your Bachelor Degree (and ideally a TESOL certification course under your belt-- but that is still optional- the bachelor degree is generally 90% of the time needed now to get hired.) and living in a hostel to meet people to compare notes with and checking out job listings on http://tealit.com That, of course makes it necessary to get a renewable tourist visa from the the Taiwanese 'trade office' in your country to get yourself started. Generally you can get in for 30 days easily from most western countries, and get a feel for the place and look for jobs and interview in person (rent a scooter and see if you can find flatmates during that time too) If you get hired, you will need to leave the country and go to an overseas trade office to renew your visa, (like Hong Kong or Okinawa), and come back to get your visa switched. You may need to do it again, before the paperwork all goes through. --Look at it as a challenge, an adventure, and you will be fine. more details: http://tealit.com Government Information Office (may have some useful stuff for visa related things- it seems to change every year so its very possible the stuff I told you is outdated now.) http://www.gio.gov.tw Others Hi Riachuela, sorry for leading you here.
