Im being flown to meet a potential employer tomorrow. He is from Taiwan. Is there any cultural things American |
Travel Info people do that might offend him. He sounds like he is Americanized, but I still dont want to do anything stupid. Also any words in Taiwanese that I should know that may amuse him? Thanks Travel Tips Forget about trying to say anything in Chinese beyond the standard Ni-Hao (hello.) There is too much room for error and too big of a chance that you will make an idiot of yourself. Other than that, follow his lead. If he offers you something to drink, drink it. Even if you don't want to. If you don't like it, take a little sip at the begining of the meeting, and then down it at the end, after you stand up, so there will be no chance of your cup being refilled. If he gestures for you to go through a doorway first, you should make the same gesture to him, and then he will insist that you go first, and only then should you be the first one through the door. If he offers you his card, he will offer it with both hands, and you should grab it with both hands. Other than that, thank him a lot, and watch what he does. I am sure there will not be any major problems. Source(s): Lived in Taiwan for the past 2 years. Other Travel Tips I would double check any advice you get fon words to use. I would hate to have you think you're telling him that you admire his suit when you're really telling him his dog is sexy, know what I mean? :) I don't have any other advice, though. Best of luck! Think positive! Do not try any words. Too many words are similar and you have a high risk of messing up. Accept everything he gives you (food, drink etc) Shake hands with a slight nod of your head. Accept anything he hands you with both hands and give him things with both hands. If he gives you his business card (take it with both hands) and set it in front of you for the duration of the meeting. Be yourself. Good luck! If you don't speak any Chinese, then don't try to impress him linguistically. You should just be polite and be professional. Just because someone's from Taiwan, you cannot assume much about his linguistic or cultural background. He could have been educated in the US and speaks fluent American English. He may only know Mandarin Chinese and not any of the local Taiwanese dialects such as Taiwanese or Hakka. Again, the best thing to do is be professional since this is an interview. Jiayou! Personal experience. the Taiwanese are very well aware of American's culture so just be the regular you should be fine. Chances are, the Taiwanese of big firms' executives and bosses are US-educated. |
