Taiwan? Money?

Travel Info
Hi people,

For those who have been to taiwan or who are taiwanese, how much do you think I should be bringing over in US$? I will be going to places like Shilin night market, some amusement park, Taipei 101, hotspring, Xi Meng Ding etc. Are the transportation costs expensive? Will the weather be sorching hot in late July to early Aug? Thanks =P

Hot hot hot and humid my friend. Eating is relatively inexpensive, you can get breakfast for a US buck, lunch for 2-3 and dinner the same, unless you eat at fancy places. Transportation is relatively inexpensive if you use the bus, but you will need to speak Mandarin or have some one with you that can. A native can help you with the bus routes.
Bring credit cards along. Many places accept it.
Of course cash is neccessary for night markets. But frankly I don't find their night market exciting. You can easily find those things in Singapore or Malaysia.
If you are expecting to get things (faked) like in China, then you will be disappointed.
Hi,

I would recommend only bringing about $200 in cash with you, which you can exchange at the airport and just use to get to your accommodations and get setup. I would recommend mainly using your ATM card in Taiwan to withdraw NT, as it's a much easier and safer way to keep your money.

Maybe just withdraw 2-3000 NT when you go to Shilin (if you want to eat), or 5-6000 NT if you want to buy clothes, dvd's, and other durable items. Same thing with amusement parks, just withdraw the money you'll need before you go with your ATM card.

For Taipei 101, I would recommend only taking about 1,000 NT to cover food, but plan to use your debit and/or credit cards for purchases in the shops in the building. All the shops in 101 are quite modern and all (at least as I recall) of them accept Visa and Mastercard.

The weather will be terribly hot in July and August, unless it's raining, in which case it will be very warm and horrendously humid (even when it's raining!).

Good luck, and enjoy your time in Taiwan!
It is HOT, humid and there is a good chance that you may experience a typhoon. You can pick up beautiful umbrellas here for less than $5.
June is the best month of the year here.
As for money....
It really depends on what your idea of expenses might be.
Food is really cheap in Taiwan. You should be able to get on on $5 to $7 a day.
Buses and taxis are about the same or a little cheaper than most medium sized American cities. You can even rent a scooter (It's sort of like a motorcycle. Check Vespa on the net. That's an Italian scooter.)
If you like night markets, Shinlin is great. You should also check out Snake Alley. I know it's strange, but you can tell your friends some great stories when you go back home about it. ONLY use cash in the markets. It may not safe to use your Visa.
Hot springs are GREAT. Yanmin Shan (I may have spelled it wrong.) is the best.
I can't really say the exact amount you should bring, but I'd guess that daily expenses will be about $15-$20 dollars a day. That does not include accommodations.
I have included some great links for you to check out.

I hope this helps. And remember, the foreigners here are usually quite helpful. Most of us are teachers.
Local transportation is inexpensive - MRT and busses even taxis. Night market and most food court places are inexpensive as well. You could do fine with NT$1000-1500/day or US$30-50/day.

Yes it's very humid and hot during the summer but you get these thundershowers in the afternoons that cools thing off a bit. It's also typhoon season so plan accordingly.

Have a good trip!
I'm a Taiwanese and living in Singapore now, there are some recommendable places for you:

Wu Fen Pu
If you like to buy cheap clothes, shopping at Wu Fen Pu will be a great idea, my hairdresser(Singaporean) just back from a trip of Taiwan last month, she went to Wu Fen Pu twice during that trip.

For hot spring, I recommend YingGang, you can arrange a outdoor dinner over there, free hot spring and nice view at night. It's located on the hill behind of Tien-mou, just spend approx US$8 by taxi from downtown of Taipei, it's convenient.

Tamsui
Don't miss to visit Tamsui, just 50 mins by MRT, Ah Gei, Tamsui fish ball, hard egg are the famous local foods, sunset is also nice, you can arrange the same day to Shilin night market after visiting Tamsui, Shilin is on the way back from Tamsui by MRT.

Pearl Milk Tea
If you like pearl milk tea and snack, ChunShuiTang is the famous and original of pearl milk tea.
