Travel Tips
human trafficing in the sex industry. Vietnamese, Malaysian, Cambodian, Russian, East European women brought in as KTV hookers. Thats the scam the mafia here do in association with the mafia in those countries...

the maid industry: bringing in Philipinos, Malaysians, Vietnamese to work as house slaves, raping abusing them and firing them if they speak up. Denying them privacy, denying them the time to read their own language or to study chinese, denying them the ability to call their homes when they want. denying them the ability to talk to other philipinos, denying them the ability to get time off work even on Sundays, or generally treating them like animals. Pity the poor philipino woman you see at the store escorting their (spoiled, future criminal) children around. This only applys to those Taiwanese over age 40. They tend to be the F###ed up ones who will do anything for cash. Younger taiwanese tend to be more human in most cases.

The english teaching industry to a lesser extent: agents set up 'jobs' for Westerners, the newbies arrive and only get paid 70% of what they could be making if they just showed up and got the job themselves. (the other 30% goes to the agency that 'set' up the job- just find it yourself online or show up in July or August, or march, and meet some people and find out the industry)

Agencies will also on occasion bring in people to a school, stating jobs are available at that new school, there are not enough jobs for the numbers brought, selling the extra heads (this is for Americans, Canadians and Australians) to other schools and attempting to deny the newbies the ability to get what they were promised. This happens less the last 2-3 years but I have heard enough stories about agencies to know you dont want to touch them with a 25 foot pole. They are parasites. At least they can quit and look for other jobs- generally we are lucky to have the financial resources to do this, and even if you are stuck making 70% of what you SHOULD be making, IF you are white, you can still save some cash and escape easily, unlike philipinos, thais, malays, cambodians, nigerians etc.

Thats why this place is on L2 of the human trafficing watch list and not anywhere near getting off it. People here still need to get off the racism bandwagon, unfortunately.

That all being said, 95% of all jobs are legit and 95% of all business people are as honest as you would find out west (ie not breaking laws and avoiding problems with half truths), and most employers will pay and avoid trouble with the various agencies that try to look like they are doing something. But I would really be worried if I was Philipino or someone who could not speak some chinese to come and work as a nanny here. I never hear anything nice about living with your boss, and the money cant be THAT great. Source(s): personal experience with agencies- i quit and got myself a place at another school different than the one the agency placed me and tried to sell me to. I am Canadian. I met my wife there and am quite happily living in Taiwan with her, but the stories I have heard from Philipino workers and read in the papers here are the main sources for the other ones.
I also have met a few eastern european dancers working out here. They tend to have interesting stories...

God bless the multinational world! We need someone to keep the jerks in line. Forgive my slightly jaded view of the world- I get angry thinking about my arrival and thank god for the chance I have to teach the future leaders of Asia how to be somewhat more civilized than their parents who came from the hell that Mao and Chiang Kai Shek made for China and Asia in general. Without people coming out and TRYING to make it better, it never will BE better.

Other Travel Tips
Yeah, but I'm not going to advertise them...If you want, just paypal me $20 and I'll give you eternal happiness.
Yes i've got a load of them but i want the money upfront!
Get $1 for each envelope you stuff after posting fliers on telephone poles! Assemble craft products the company won't buy from you at home! Get paid to fill out surveys they don't send you after paying $49.95!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Taiwan? Never run across any. The closest is when you go to a market, ask for 2 or 3 pieces of fruit, and they try to give you a dozen.
Definitely.
