Made in Taiwan?

Travel Info
I notice that I see alot of things that are made in Taiwan. From the flags I buy to the gifts I give to my cousins, half of them seem to be made in Taiwan. I figure there would have to be a pretty large amount of factories in Taiwan to support this, and even though Taiwan isn't big, it would seem they are able to fit them all.

Anyways, my question is, where in Taiwan are all these things made? I assume it wouldn't be anywhere north like Taipei.

Travel Tips
You're right, Taiwan does not seem to have a great deal of area for manufacturing. But, it takes less space than you'd think, and to some extent it's spread out over the island.
Even small cities have their own industrial sectors.

Taipei does indeed have some industry, they handle electronics, textiles, metals, and ship-building, and motorcycles.

Kaohsiung in the south is also a major center of industry, and also is the major port city of Taiwan, and handles most of the exports, such as those flags you bought. ;) Source(s): For more information:

Every town has a manufacturing area here.

Quality wise- it depends on the product.
electrical and computer related products= high quality. High standards are set by multinational companies and must be met. Your computer likely has quite a few major parts assembled here inside it.
clothes= not bad, other than frequent english misspelling.
plastic toys=low quality.
varying quality of differing building supplies.
In general companies which follow standards (which I believe are purely voluntary) and mark up their prices a bit as a result- tend to give good quality, just like back at home. Unfortunately a strong theme here is to cut costs as much as possible and often unsafely produce certain things (ie construction workers safety- the reason things are quickly made here but accident rates are sky-high, and the resulting building quality seems low, it does generally meet anti-earthquake standards for structure but there wont be much to say about the decoration.)
certain wood products, carvings and art can show flashes of extreme high quality.
Unfortunately as the wood industry mass produces 'art' the quality correspondingly of tables, sculptures (as the environmental footprint increases) goes down.

so in the end my answer is quality is what you pay for. Buyer beware. I highly suggest if you do business here to hire independant undercover fact-checkers to keep tabs on the businesses you deal with and make sure the management follows any standards and safety guidelines you want implemented. Watch out for the family/friends nepotism set up- thats a sure ticket to crap quality.
