How will Ma Ying-jeou affect cross-strait relations? |
Travel Info (Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Ma Ying-jeou will most likely be the next President of Taiwan.) Travel Tips I agree that his election certainly seems likely. One of my friends there is worried that a Ma presidency would erode the progress towards independence that Taiwan has been making, although I certainly hope that is not the case. Although I admit that my knowledge of Taiwanese politics is by no means comprehensive, in my research I have noticed that relations between Taiwan and China seem to swing back and forth in a cyclical manner. During Chen's presidency, relations were strained due to his attempts to move the island closer to both functional and literal independence. Ma will most likely seek to allay these tensions by advocating closer economic ties to the mainland. I do not see him moving strongly towards changing the status quo, though, given the growing Taiwanese sentiment towards functional, if not technical, independence, and a sense of their own national identity. It depends somewhat on how the vote goes, I think. If he wins by a wide margin I suspect he will feel that he has been given a mandate and can push more strongly his "proactive" approach to cross-strait relations. We shall see. Others Probably easier trade ties with China. He will set back the independance movement, and probably keep ****-teasing the chinese government some more so they will continue doing trade and not launching missiles. Hopefully the government there will be intelligent enough to not provoke taiwanese with more empty threats. That only helps burn any bridges between the two sides. Nobody opens their jacket for a cold wind. The only way I see Taiwanese giving up independance is for China to get a freely elected responsible government and a well educated population that is capable of supporting a democracy, Ie: not in the next 50 years will it happen in a voluntary way. ie more of the same last 60 years of independance, probably more getting stuffed down like a geek in the corner on prom night by a big dumb jock everyone pretends to like so they can get into his swimming pool and screw his hot sister and mom. |
