Is it true that in Thailand weddings are often held at precise times for astrological reasons?

Travel Info
I've heard that in Thailand weddings are sometimes at times like 11.43 a.m. or 3.42 p.m, because an astrologer has given this as the most auspicious start time. Is this true? And if so, is it important, as a guest, to turn up at precisely this time?

it's crazy but it's true. Source(s): been to many thai weddings

Yes, that's true. My Thai friend told me about it. Interesting, no? Well, i guess the guests are used to midnight invitations if it is such a common practice.
Yes it is true.... not only for wedding but for most thai events, like to start a ceremony at a certain date and time for the best time "mong khon" This also goes for ribbon cutting ceremonies, opening of new businesses, ordaining a new monk, a monk leaving the monkhood, driving ur brand new car out of the dealership, etc..

As the time concern for the wedding, usually its not the whole wedding in itself, but just for certain events in the ceremony. like a certain time the groom's family starts there parade to the bride's house, and a certain time they begin the holy water ceremony or "naam sang"(thats when family elders and special guest pour holy water into the bride and grooms hands while giving them their best wishes and blessings)

As far as the time for the guests to arrive at the reception dinner, the astrological time doesn't pertain to them. Thais are not at all punctual with their show up times, for them its not considered rude too be late. if u were to arrive on time u might actually be surprised too see that less than 40% of the guests have showed up already..... just show up b4 the party ends lol.....

actually i'd show up b4 dinner is served....dont worry so much about it.. just be the polite westerner and show up on time.....not too early tho cuz it might embarass the host cuz they might not yet be ready....

enjoy the wedding...

Yes it's true
I married a Thai lady. We saw a Monk at the local temple first. He gave us a few "lucky" dates with their corresponding time of day. It's pretty standard to get/ask for a few dates from the Monk. It allows the couple to choose a date that is convenient for everyone.

Getting to your point about guests turning up at precisely the right time. On our wedding day even though we had been given our lucky time of 3PM we actually never had the ceremony until 5PM (I was dressed ready to go from 2PM) The in-laws decided much to everyone's and my relief that it was much too hot at 3PM. Our ceremony/reception was at my in-laws home so timing was less important. I imagine if we had of rented a reception room at the Chiangmai MarriotI things would have been different. I got the impression that getting the date right was the main thing, the time was less important. Guests were arriving all night up until finish at midnight. It wasn't expected that you had to come to the ceremony, just coming to the party/reception only at a later time was fine. Pretty much the same as most places I think.
Yes, that's why they sometimes marry during the week when everybody is working!

But not only wedding...
