What parts of Thailand would you recommend as a part-time residence for a retiree who likes peace and quiet? |
Travel Info What parts of Thailand would you recommend as a part-time residence for a retiree who likes peace and quiet? Travel Tips I agree with Zygotic. Isaan is very peaceful and quiet, and above all people are very friendly. English is not so commonly spoken so you may need to learn Thai a little but you can appreciate the real Thailand. First of all, why not take a long vacation and travel around the country to see by yourself, then pick up the place you think the best. Good luck! Others I'd recommend Chiang Mai, but not in the city area--try somewhere "around" the city area. The weather is very nice. The landscape is excellence. People are friendly. There are also lots of expats around if you need some similarities. Cultures are very rich in the area. Foods are on top of the world. Plus it is not expensive to live there. I'm confidence you will love every minutes there. Good luck! Lived there for 5 years and still love it. Chieng Mai,Chieng Rai,Lampphang,or Mae Hong Sorn if you wish to need truly quiet..,welcome The weather in the North is very nice. This depends on a number of factors. Firstly, you should ensure you are entitled to a retirement visa or at least acquire a non-immigrant multiple re-entry visa so you can travel in and out of Thailand when you want to. The requirements for a non-immigrant visa are not very onerous. Secondly, you should decide what type of accommodation appeals to you. Something that might be peaceful and quite could be a little difficult to come buy if you want to purchase a house/apartment in Thailand. There are fairly restrictive ownership laws for non-Thais although many non-Thais seem to circumvent these laws. Thirdly, you might need to decide between whether you like coastal areas (one should rule out much of Pattaya, Phuket is rather expensive and Koh Samui is not far behind Phuket but there are other places), upland areas (such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Petchaboon - "Little Switzerland" for some wealthy Thais or a place like Loei - close to the border with the Lao PDR or even a North Eastern city such as Khon Kaen), or simply the countryside (any village in rural Thailand that has not been completely transformed by "modernity" will do). Of course you could even vary where you stay during your time in Thailand. Fourthly, you might like to decide whether you want to be more fully immersed in Thai society and culture than just the non-Thai "retiree" culture in Thailand. I would recommend taking advantage of both if you can. However, it is a bit of an "oxymoron" to expect "peace" and "quite" in Thailand. Like other Asian societies Thailand is an alive and vibrant society, which while affording people plenty of personal space, is not really a place one should go for simply for "peace" and "quite": it is a society to be lived in. Cheers Shane Own personal experience: I am based in Thailand. Tourist area may not be your choice if you want peace and quite. Air pollution, traffic, environment, heath care hospital and expenses may become major factors for your decision. I'd recommend some places out of Bangkok not too far ( Bangkok still most efficient for all aspects) that provide healthy program for retiree to live and have variety of activities you can be a member of retiree center, or you can rent a house where ever you want to and get daily joining the center that all up to you. Most of all you must become a part of community and you wont feel lonely in Thai environment. Here are list of provinces you may check its geography from website of each one. Nakornratchasima (Korat) , Phetchabun, Nakornnayok, Prajinburi . These provinces are only 1-3 hrs drive north-eastern of Bangkok called Issan and there is good medical service similar to Bangkok, but no traffic jam, no polluted-air. i hope this is matched what you desire.
