Good vegetarian food in thailand? |
Travel Info does anyone know any good thai dishes that DON'T have fish sauce in them? Travel Tips loads and loads of dishs for vegetarians to eat in thailand. I doubt if they come with fish sauce. but just say no fish sauce (mai ao nahm bplaa) Others veggie pad thai....pronounced pa tai. love thai food with fish sauce, their thai tea dont have fish sauce . pad thai is very good. try the noodles with soup and vegetables. About 99% of Thai foods contain fish sauce, which makes Thai food Thai and taste really really good. Though, if you dislike fish sauce (the smell, etc) you can tell the cook to sub fish sauce with soy sauce. It is possible. You just have to ask for it. Me..I'm Thai. Vegetarian food is pretty easy to find but as a previous poster mentioned you must be specific about leaving out fish sauce if you do not want it. Fish sauce (nam blah) is used in most Thai dishes often as a kind of salt replacement so although you will change the flavour salt can be used instead of fish sauce or left out completely. My favourite dishes, all are 'converted' from regular meat dishes include: Phad Thai - noodles, peanuts, bean sprouts etc Khao Soy - soft and fried flat noodles in a curry sauce with pickled vegetables, onions etc Kao Ob Sapparot - pineapple rice, often served/cooked in a scooped out pineapple Vegetarian food is understood and respected, I guess due to the Buddhist nature of the place, you can nearly always ask for veggie dishes or veggie versions of dishes. The key phrase in Thai is 'ahan' or 'aharn' 'jay' or 'jeh' depending on your accent, meaning 'vegetarian/vegan food'. There are also many vegetarian restaurants/stalls/vendors, follow the last link in my sources below and look at the photos for Chao Ngo restaurant (at the bottom of the first photo) and Samphao Thip restaurant (top right of the photo) to see the Thai language symbols that you will need to look out for. Most vegetarian places will have a yellow sign with red characters and the two main characters designating 'Jeh' or 'Jay' will often look like a stylised number 17 with a continental 7. A word of warning: I arrived in Thailand some 7 years ago for a two week holiday, not only am I still here but the sights and smells of Thai food converted me back to being an omnivore after many years of vegetarianism!! Also you may like to know that there is a vegetarian festival in Phuket every year I think it is early in October.
