How do I know if a TEFL course in Thailand is legitimate? |
Travel Info I am going to Thailand to teach and study. I have been recommended to two TEFL courses both in Ban Phe. They sound too good to be true, you pay a down payment, you get the course for free then they pay you to teach for several months. I keep seeing "Thai Special Project" What do you know, what do you suggest? Travel Tips Have you asked the right person or what! I have been teaching in Thailand for over 15 years. These TEFL courses are just more of the money-making that this business is about. The 'real' TEFL courses offer certificates from either Trinity College or RSA Cambridge. The rest are just copies. You can most certainly do these courses in Thailand. They are far more expensive than the rest. They cost around 2000 USD for an intensive month-long course. So you must ask yourself why you want to do a TEFL course. If you just want to teach in Thailand, just do a cheaper Thai copy. The course provider will set you up with a 40,000 Baht per month job at the end of the course. If you want a qualification that is recognised around the world, you must do a Trinity College or RSA Cambridge course. Try to research as much as you can. All course providers will promise the moon. Remember this is Thailand, there's no trades descriptions act and consumer protection law here. Good luck. Others Ask to speak to some former students who have completed the course first. Personally, unless you already have a university degree to compliment the TEFL certificate, it sounds far too good to be true. In Thailand, you need a university degree to be allowed to work in the country (even teaching english). All the reputable schools will demand this, but some dodgy schools still dont ask for it, however, the trade off is that usually these bad schools treat their teachers quite poorly (sometimes to the point of abuse!) because they know full well that the staff cant complain to the police unless they want to be arrested and deported for breaching their visa conditions. So, in conclusion the important things to consider are these: - If you dont have a degree, chances are the course is a scam and you wont get any work, or the work will be illegal. - If the company cannot provide you any satisfied customers to support them, then it's probably because they cant find any. - Generally Thailand is a very popular place for English teachers, and therefore the wages and conditions for TEFL teachers are nowhere near as good as in other nearby countries like Cambodia and Vietnam. Working towards it at the moment, myself. it's hard to tell if one is fake or not, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. I wouldn't make no down payment until you are in Thailand and see the school, also talk to the people where you plan to teach. Will they get you your work permit? also don't work for a agency you need to work directly for the school. When they tell you no problem that's the time to worry. |
