Travel Info When is the water festival in thailand? Travel Tips Thailand's most celebrated festival is the Songkran Water Festival. It starts April 13 and lasts between 3 and 10 days, depending on where you are in Thailand. The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing. It is a Public Spring Cleaning Day, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner. During the afternoon of the 13th, Buddha images are bathed as part of the ceremony. Young people pour scented water into the hands of elders and parents as a mark of respect while seeking the blessing of the older people. In ancient days, old people were actually given a bath and clothed in new apparel presented by the young folks as a token of respect for the New Year. Others It just happened in April. My parents were there for vacation. It's a celebration for their New Year. People walk around the streets and dump water on you. My parents were eating in a restaurant and a group of people came in and dumped water down their backs. Their cab driver was equipped with water guns to shoot at people on the street. Songkran water festival is between April 10 to April 18 and lasts for two or three days. Don't walk around with your cameras. . . . It's Shongkran Day , 11-18 April ,we splash water each other,very fun especially at Chiang Mai. The real day is 13 April,it's new year day of Thai Culture. Its in April.. This year, it lasted for 4 days.. Ppl splash water on others as a form of blessing but nowadays. some pranksters add flour to the water and splash that!! Its a mess I tell you.. The water festival is called Songkran or the Thai New Year. It is celebrated between 13-15 Apr each year. The number of days allocated for the holiday differs from province to province and even the Govt this year proclaim it officially as a 7-day event in the capital. Usually the tourism website at http://www.tourismthailand.org gives you a better indication of the celebration dates in each province, but them again you will need to check with the TAT office for that province as the duration can change again. |
