Terrorism in south?

Travel Info
Is it dangerous to visit south thailand now? http://thailand-daily-news.blogspot.com/...

Travel Tips
yes there is many problems in the deep south of Thailand, however that person hurt was worked for the media and was covering the story in the country not a tourist. all resort areas are mainly safe. terrorism is everywhere in the world now, we must learn to live with it. as for the terrorism the Thai government is useless in doing anything about the situation and the army and police are ineffective. Gen Sonthi should be fired.

well. It's not really a tourist spot, so I don't know why you'd want to visit it. The issues are happening on the tip of Thailand - it doesn;t affect the tourist parts like Phang Nga, Krabi or Phuket.
Very dangerous! Stay in Bangkok or the middle part which still have some good beaches such as Hua Hin. Or you can safely visit the north such as Chiengmai.
avoid the deep three provinces in the south: Songkla, Yala, Patanee.
Yes, there daily reports in the Bangkok Post online site. www.bangkokpost.com The attacks have been indiscriminate, buddhist, muslim, man, women and children, old and young, military, police and residents. Teachers, anyone. The one westerner, a Canadian, was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The majority of the tourist areas are 400 miles from the southern area. Including Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, etc. There is plenty to do in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, etc. If you have to go into that area, go to Malaysia and look from across the border.

Recently, the teachers went on strike because they were not getting enough protection.

Good luck

Terrorist attacks don't happen often but you have to remember that these terrorist do attack mostly tourist so beware.
Terrorism is always unpredictable so it's hard to say whether it's truly safe or not.

Having said that, I passed through the south on my way from Malaysia to Bangkok and didnt have any trouble. In fact, I felt quite safe. As with travelling in all areas with a potential for trouble, you should avoid public political demonstrations as they have the potential to turn violent, and also be more aware of your surrounds than you normally would (so dont drink too much). Also, try and avoid talking politics with the people down there unless you are absolutely 100% sure what side of the debate they fall into.

As a general rule, the attacks in the south mainly target locals and government institutions, so be aware of that, and at the end of the day, remember that the chances of you being caught up in strife is statistically VERY slim.

Of course, these areas are much further south than the tourist beaches of Phuket and the islands, so if that's where you are going, dont worry. Your biggest risk there will be from taxi drivers trying to overcharge.

Have fun!
