It's pretty safe. The Thai government takes extra care to ensure that tourism into the country, which is one of the largest revenue earners for their national exchequer, is not harmed.
it is resasonable safe to visit thailand. they do have some problems in the deep southern providences including 7 small bombs in Hat Yai last night. However most of the popular beach resort areas and other regions of the country are safe. Bangkok for the most part is safe, just kept away from any area where they may be having some protest.

Broadly I agree with the answers above. The only reason for me adding my answer is to say that this week there may be some sort of political unrest focused on Bangkok and I can't say with any honestly - nor do I think anyone else can - that I know how its going to turn out. The background is that the Constitution Tribunal is due in 2 days time - 30 May 2007 - to deliver its decision in a case concerning whether the 2 main political parties, the TRT and the Democrat party, broke election laws in last year's general election. Theoretically, conviction for these offence can lead to dissolution of a political party. How the parties and the supporters of these political parties will react to the decision of the Tribunal, whatever the decision is, is anybody's guess. In a worst case scenario it could lead to unrest on the streets in some parts of Bangkok. However, I am sure that the army will take strict measures to contain any unrest. On the TV a couple of nights ago it said that people who might be protesters were going to be prevented from entering Bangkok and that steps were being taken in Isan - an area where TRT has strong support - to restrict travel to Bangkok this week unless a non-political protest reason for travel could be shown. Whether such strong controls on people's movemnet will be implemented or not I don't know - I am just repeating what was reported on TV.

So, in conclusion, Bangkok is generally safe as per the answers above. However, on Wednesday this week you might want to keep an eye on the news channels/buy a newspaper on Thursday morning to keep yourself in the loop about how things are developing.
If you don't mind going to a country where the inhabitants doesn't care about other than themselves. Notice: Human lives are the only really cheap thing in Thailand.
Then it is safe to go here.
I live in Bangkok and feel safer here than in any major US city without a doubt. I feel safe out on the streets 24/7. One key is not to be too trusting of people that start a conversation. Many people are very nice and good but, like anywhere not all.
Also use basic and common sense when in crowds and avoid certain areas as you would anywhere. I've walked through back streets and alleys and said to myself, "I sure wouldn't be walking here in the US". Come, enjoy this beautiful and culturally diverse land--it's people, food, customs, shopping etc. You'll be glad you did and you will be planning to return even before you leave.
