Is it a third world country?

Travel Info
Is Thailand considered by most to be a third world country and also how far behind is combodia behind thailand does anyone think that cambodia will one day be on pare with thailand

Travel Tips
Hi, Thailand is a developing country. It is not a third world country as its standard of living is quite high. Cambodia though, as indicated by Jenny, is a third world country. Her points on Cambodia is quite correct.

As for Kanuni's comment about Thailand being a sex country, I think he is very much outdated, and not too sure of the ongoings in the region. He does not even know Cambodia. Over the years, Thailand is purging itself of the sex industry label. In fact, prostitution is against the law. And people caught can be jailed. There was a period last couple of years where there was a clampdown with visits by the police and rounded up the offenders, locals and foreigns. So. do not associate Thailand to the old days label anymore.

Now, Thailand is thriving on its tourist industry and sex tourist can exclude Thailand permanently.

Sometimes, I do hope fellow answerers know their facts before penning their answers.

No Thailand is a so-called "take-off country". It is no third world country anymore but somewhere in between. They are slowly doing better economically
Cambodia on the other hand is still far behind and considered to be a third world country. It will take a while for Cambodia to catch up.
Well, to be honest, I consider Thailand as a third world country with beautiful touristic destinations. As a matter of fact, I have never been to Thailand but if I am not wrong, our opinions about Thailand that depends on any kind of publicity, our prejudices and/or our cultural background is what you are exactly asking.
PS: the ongoing sex tourism is an important factor that deteriorates the image of your country. And where the hell is Cambodia? I have heard the name, I know it is somewhere in Far East but that's all.
I don't think Cambodia is a good reference country to compare Thailand with and vice verse.
Thailand is a bit of an enigma and defies many of the "labels" - when my thai wife visited the usa for the first time she was surprised at the lack of quality technology - you cannot compare a cinema 5 in the usa with small screens and music audible from the next cinema to the great theatres they have here - in Bkk..

As to Cambodia - they killed off all the intellectuals and professionals in a mass murder not too long ago - they need time to recover - a long time..
Thailand has a good economy and a reasonably good living standard. If you ever get to see what Bangkok is like, you will know that it is NOT a third world country.

As for Kanuni - as a user, you have the right to answer the question but please, it would be better not to give opinion about something you have no idea what you are talking about. You have NEVER been to Thailand and NEVER heard of Cambodia yet you are telling us "I don't think Cambodia is a good reference country to compare Thailand with and vice verse (sic)"

(by the way - Cambodia is one of the two countries bordering east of Thailand )

Apart from that, I think everyone else pretty much said what I would have said.
Is thailand a third world country?? I dont think so, but that depends on what part of Thailand you're talking about.
Most big cities, especially Bangkok, have all the anemities of any city in Canada, if not more......all the hospitals, resturants, shopping centres, cinemas, etc., that a person could ask for

However, in the northeastern part of the country, or Isaan, as the thais call it, it is a bit of a different story......Most people are rice farmers and do not have a lot of money, or a decent education to get a good job.....Most of them end up as labourers or factory workers, but even if they never have much money, they are not starving......Isaan is also where about 80% of the prostitutes in the big cities like Bangkok come from, and by the way, there IS a lot of prostitution in thailand....

With that being said, a lot of people still have the old notion that cheap sex is the only reason people go to thailand-it is not........Thailand has some of the friendliest people and the most beautiful beaches in the world

Cambodia, on the other hand is a different story....Most intellectuals were killed during the Khmer Rouge regime, and the country has never been the same since.....I've been there 2 times, and I hate to say it, but that country will never be on par with thailand, ever.......sad but true

Kanuni.....please dont voice your opinion on matters that you dont know f.a. about....thank you
It would be best if you did not referred to countries such as Thailand as "Third world" It's so derogotary! Refer to them as "developing" or simply poor. Why say "third word". Thailand is beautiful.
