Can you cash a foreign check at a Thai bank? |
Travel Info I have a check that's been issued to me by the U.S. Government. Unfortunately, the company that handled my return this year botched the direct deposit. I can't go home to get it because it expires after 60 days. If I have it sent to Thailand, it may use several of those days, which I can't risk if I can't get it cashed here. So...can I cash my check from the U.S. government at a bank in Thailand? Travel Tips Sorry to tell you this, but no way would a Thai Bank cash an American check. If you have a bank account here, you can deposit the check into your account, but I've done that with cashier's checks and they have taken 30 days to clear. I'm not condoning forgery, but can't somebody you trust sign your name for you and deposit the check into your account? Others http://www.kasikornbank.com Go to the nearest branch of the Kasikornbank in Thailand and open a foreign resident's account. Here you can deposit your check and it should take about 2- 3 weeks to clear. Faster if it's in Bangkok. travel writer/ lived in Thailand I am not sure if a Thai bank will do that, I know Bangkok Bank wouldn't cash a check written on my U.S. Bank by me into my account. i agree with Gerald, I would have someone sign your name to the back and deposit it into your state side account. Maybe the US Embassy can help you out. I would have a friend make the US deposit for you. No Thai bank will cash that check without placing at least a 45 day hold on it. The foreign currency accounts are too expensive to even open and are only recommended for persons dealing in large amounts of currency. Have a trusted friend make the deposit for you...that way you can access you money sooner. I too, had a US government check and was able to deposit it in my Thai bank account without any holds placed on it. Deposit--yes, Cash--questionable. Good luck. |
