Travel Info Hello Every one, i will be in Phuket in June in Patong Merlin Hotel, and i know the weather will be hard a little bit for sea activities, so do you have an idea where can i go in the city and how much it will cost me? i like shopping, sight seening & good night clubs. Travel Tips Antique Buildings Many buildings in Phuket were built over hundred years since the beginning of the tin boom during the Nineteenth Century. The architectural style, typical of the region, is described as Sino-Portuguese and has a strongly Mediterranean character. Shops present a very narrow face on the street but stretch back a long way. Many, especially on Dibuk Rd (name of Tin)., have old wooden doors with Chinese fretwork carving. Other streets, forming what might be called "Old Phuket", with similar structures are Phang-nga, Yaowarat, Thalang, and Krabi, and a walking tour of the area is easy and delightful. Some other old European-style buildings of note are the Provincial Hall (Sala Klang), the Phuket Courthouse (San Changwat), and Siam City Bank. ................................. Phuket Aquarium is located at Cape Panwa, on the island鈥檚 extreme southeast The aquarium displays hundreds of exotic, grotesque and flamboyantly colorful marine species found in Phuket鈥檚 teeming waters. Open daily from 8.30 in the morning until 4 o鈥檆lock in the afternoon. A local bus can be taken from the town鈥檚 fresh produce market. ................................. Phuket Butterfly Farm and Aquarium is only 3 kilometres from town via Yaowarat Road and the Sam Kong intersection. It has a fascinating collection of such tropical creatures as butterflies, insects marine life all arranged in natural surroundings. It is open daily from 9 p.m.-5 p.m. ................................. Thai Village And Orchid Farm on Thepkasattri Road about 3 kilometres from town, serves daily a typical southern Thai lunch that is followed by a spectacular cultural show including Thai dances, sword-fighting, Thai boxing southern customs and elephants. Handicrafts are also on display. ................................. Chalong Bay Phuket鈥檚 principal baot anchorage and the islands lareast bay, is 11 kilometres south of the town. It is very picturesque but not suitable for swimming. Boats can be chartered to go to some small island south of Phuket. A number of restaurants are on the road leading to the bay. A few kilometers from the bay is Wat Chalong where statues of Luang Po Chaem and Luang Po Chuang, Phuket鈥檚 most revered monks, are enshrined. ................................. Chalong Temple is about 8 kms. outside town. Take Vichit Songkram Rd., to the Bypass Rd., and turn left, and drive for about 10 mins. Wat Chalong will be on your left. This is where stands the cast statue of Luang Por Cham, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee, or Chinese Coolie, Rebellion in 1876 during the reign of Rama V. There are also statues of Luang Por Chaung, and Luang Por Gluam. Other monks, who were abbots of the temple during later times, and who are the objects of respect and recipients of the offerings by Phuket people generally. ................................. Laem Ka at the extreme southwest of Chalong bay, is suitable for swimming ................................. The nearby Phrom Thep Cape forms Phuket 鈥榮 southern most point and is the perfect place from which to enjoy spectacular sunsets and the sea. People usually say that the shape of Laem Phrom Thep looks like a dragon head of Indian Ocean. ................................. Nai Han Beach is located next to Phrom Thep Cape about 18 kilomatres from town. Although not so long , the beach has white , clean sand and Nai Han Beach sometime look lively when many yachts float in the sea ahead of the shore. Beyond the beach is a swamp called Nong Han. Not recommended for swimming during May-October because of the Monsoon season. ................................. The View Point or Sam Ao Viewpoint is located mid-point between Nai Han and Kata beach nestle beside one another forming the picture of the crescent moon which is the marvelous nature creation. The scenic Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches, and Ko Pu Island can be viewed from this point. ................................. Kata beach The quiet charming beach, good and safe for swimming various kinds of activity are provided like diving, playing banana boats or strolling along the shore. ................................. Karon beach The white sandy beach which is one of Phuket鈥檚 most beautiful beach. Both are long and peaceful and eminently suitable for swimming and sunbathing. ................................. Patong Beach Phuket鈥檚 most developed beach offers numerous leisure, sporting, shopping and recreational options along its 3-kilometre-long crescent bay. Windsurfing, snorkeling, sailing, swimming and sunbathing number among popular daytime activities. Patong is equally well known for its vibrant nightlife, among which seafood restaurants prominently feature. ................................. Kamala Beach is a 12-kilometre-long beach north of Patong. The famous charming baech where Phuket Fantasea , the park that features cultural show is situated. The beach is beautiful and quite. Accommodation and seafood restaurants are available. ................................. Phuket Fantasea A large-scale nighttime amusement centre on 140 acres near the village of Kamala Bay, 4 kilometres north of Patong. Thai cultural traditions are mixed with the latest modern technology in 鈥淟as Vegas style鈥? Magic elephants disappearing into thin air, gymnastics, musical fountains, and a circus are among the many attractions. ................................. Wat Phra Thong is where only the upper half of a large Buddha statue emerges from the ground. Legend has it that during the invasion of Thalang town in 2328 B.E. (circa 1785) , the Burmese tried in vain to excavate the statue to take to back. Each time they dug into the ground , swarms of hornets would swoop on them and they had to give up. Later , the visible part of the statue was covered with gold by the villagers and has remained as such until today. It is about 20 kilometres from Phuket town past the Thalang district office. ................................. Ko Kaeo is and off- shore isle about 3 kilometres out from Rawai beach and can be reached in 30 minutes by boat. It offers picturesque beaches and underwater scenery. There is also a replica of the Holy Footprint on the island. ................................. It costs you depend on your activity,at least 1000 bahts/day,welcome.. CYCLING -mountain biking. Phuket Cycling Club organises regular rallies and trips to various destinations in and around the island and Phang Nga. Even if you don鈥檛 have the time or the inclination, to join in on one of their regular adventures they can tell you where the best cycling spots are. Give them a call on 216650 or rent a bike and discover the island yourself. There are various rental outlets around the island and many hotels supply bikes, free to guests. DIVING and SNORKELLING -organised trip either just swimming about along the shore-line can also be exciting. ELEPHANT RIDES - If you like views, heights and elephants, there鈥檚 no better way to survey the jungles of Phuket than atop one of these meandering monoliths. As recent residents of the island these gentle creatures have been brought to Phuket due to the decrease in the logging industry in the country鈥檚 northern reaches. Have a ride or join The Elephant Help Project in Ao Chalong at Siam Safari, telephone: 280116, email: ecearth@samart.co.th They have some excellent brochures about elephants that will certainly come in useful for a 鈥榮chool project鈥?or 鈥榮how and tell'. Even if you don鈥檛 want a ride, you can buy bananas from the elephant venue and hand feed the animals. Don鈥檛 forget to take pictures of the kids and these new found friends to send home to Grand-ma and Grand-pa. The GIBBON REHABILITATION CENTRE situated on the road leading to Ao Po on the north east coast (turn right at the 鈥楾win Sister鈥檚 Monument' traffic circle on the road leading out of Phuket going north). GO-CARTING - Thrill at the speed as you zoom around the go cart track. Situated on the road between Patong and Kathu you鈥檒l discover the Phuket Go-Kart Speedway. Give them a call on 076+321949 or just go there. HORSE RIDING is another wonderful activity. There are four centres catering to this activity and even the youngest or complete novice can join in. If you鈥檝e never ridden before, livery staff will always lead you or be there to lend a hand. Beach rides are a favourite and the jungle rides are perfect for hotter weather. All bar the Phuket Country Riding Club offer beach rides and all have jungle rides. PAINTBALL and SHOOTING - If you are 鈥榠nto鈥?blasting away at your opponent with paint-filled pellets or taking aim at a target then this is the place for you. ROCK CLIMBING There are a number of areas where a romantic couple can enjoy this pass-time. The Wall, in Rawai offers a small 10 mt. man-made wall for climbing, or Phuket Shooting Range in Ao Chalong also has a man-made climbing wall. The Laguna Resort complex's, Quest is another area where climbing can be done. If you are after the 'real' stuff, then your best bet is to make your way to Krabi, where there are numerous cliffs begging to be climbed. Remember to check all gear yourself, to doubly ensure your and your children's safety. SAILING A slightly different water activity and not often considered by those who aren鈥檛 already involved in the sport, sailing is definitely an, 鈥榓ll in the family鈥?pass-time no matter what your children鈥檚 ages. From the burbling baby to the teenager, what better way than to really discover Phuket and the surrounding waters, other than on a boat? Skipper-ed or not this is definitely one of the most pleasurable ways to spend your holiday. Here the whole family, even the tiny one鈥檚, can relax in the shade while one of the junk-rigged boats drifts past an Eden hardly touched by man. SEA CANOEING, is yet another recreation the older members of your family should experience while in this part of the world. Paddle through sea-caves and along mangrove lined estuaries teeming with wildlife. There are a number of sea-canoe and kayaking companies scattered all over the island. SWIMMING Although the waters off Phuket are generally safe, they can be downright dangerous in the wet season when on-shore winds pick the waves up to a surf-able size. Not only that but the seas are renowned for strong currents that run along the island鈥檚 west coast from the months of May/June to Oct/Nov. Don鈥檛 let that put you off, one can still swim with the younger family members but do be aware of the situation and NEVER swim without someone on the beaching watching you and your family. TEN PIN BOWLING can be found in Phuket town inside the Ocean Shopping Plaza, near Robinson鈥檚 Supermarket as well as at the Pearl Bowling Centre near the main post office in Phuket Town as well as at Big C Supercentre located on Chao Fa Nok Road (also known as the Bypass Road.) TREKKING and RAFTING There is some trekking on the island but most of the rafting activities are done in the Phang Nga area. The jungles of the Thai-Malay peninsular are some of the world鈥檚 most diverse and well worth the effort. Definitely for the older kids and their parents. There is a lovely climb through the jungle along its sides. If you鈥檇 rather relax you can either eat at the little restaurant or picnic in the area. There are two more waterfalls, both with walks up their side鈥檚, one is in Kathu, called Kathu Waterfall. The other Tone Sai Waterfall is off Thepkrasattri Road, going north of Phuket town. ZOO Another good venue for the whole family is the Phuket Zoo. Half way between Phuket town and Ao Chalong on the Chao Fa Road on the east side you鈥檒l discover this quaint menagerie.
