Is safe to travel to Narathiwat in South Thailand? |
Travel Info I'm planning on taking a 1 year teaching assignment to Thailand this year but is concerned about my safety. How safe is it to live in Narathiwat? Travel Tips I agree with most of the people who have answered your question, but nobody has seemed to address the fact that schools and teachers are among the prime targets of the terrorists in the three southernmost provinces. Here's a good article concerning the violence, please consider the situation carefully before you make any decisions: http://rawstory.com/news/2006/thailand_s... Good luck to you, there is good reason for the need for teachers there. Others not very safe. do you know they are killing people every day in that region of the country. best advice is stay up north of Hat Yai. An average of 3 or four are killed daily in that region. living in Thailand, Not too safe, that is where the bombings and insurgency are. Thailand's southernmost provinces(including Narathiwat) have been racked by a Muslim insurgency which has killed more than 2,200 people since early 2004. The secretive rebels are believed to be fighting for an independent Islamic homeland. Here are reports of some bombing incidence as recent as yesterday(28/5/07) 28/5/07 A bomb exploded in front of a busy market in the southern Thai province of Songkhla yesterday, killing four people including two children and wounding 25 others. http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fil... 27/5/07 Explosions hit Haadyai(Southern Thailand) spots favoured by Malaysians http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fil... 21/5/07 Australian photographer, 3 police injured by bomb in southern Thailand http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fil... 11/4/07 Market bombing in Thailand's restive south injures 11 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fil... 5/4/07 Grenade at mosque in southern Thailand wounds about 15 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fil... These are just only a few of the many bombing attacks that was carried out by Muslim Insurgency since 2004. It is advisable to stay away from Southern Thailand for the time being. No one, not even the Thai government can guarantee your safety there. I was born in Narathiwat and and have lived there until I was 25 before moving to Bangkok. I'd say that it's true there're a lot of bad news about my hometown. But it is not as bad as what the news said. For me(and some expats in Narathiwat), the place is quite safe, especially in the City of Narathiwat. Pople are friednly. As far as I know, there're a few expats working in Narathiwat and if Naratiwat is not really safe, Why are they still tehre? Frankly, with the current situation going on in the 3 southern states of Thailand, it is best to avoid them until the situation has improved. Why not ask for a teaching post elsewhere in Thailand? Out of the 3, there are still 73 provinces for you to choose to teach in. |
