Ha! Is the person who wrote the first answer being serious??? She must be living as a hermit underground.

Ok, no one can say with any certainty whether anywhere is safe. I mean, you can get killed in your own home nowadays. But if we forget these extreme situations, bangkok is as safe as any big city. I`m female and spent about 2 months of last year there on my own. The biggest danger I would say is the traffic but whether or not you`re alone to have problems with it is irrelevant. The biggest danger for a solo woman traveller is like anywhere, getting unwanted attention from men. I did get a lot of stares while I was out there but nothing serious ever happened to me. In fact, I`ve had more problems in london and tokyo than I have in Bangkok. As for the language barrier, sure there is one but a lot of people speak english in Bangkok and most would be keen to help you.

Just a few tips while you`re out there:

Don`t say you`re travelling alone... say you are at the moment but you`re meeting a friend later.

Never agree to go anywhere a stranger has recommended... they may seem genuine but hardly ever are.

If you`re going to ride in a tuk tuk then always agree to the fare beforehand and don`t let them stop off anywhere where they can get commission. Saying that, one of my best days in bangkok was when the driver and I agreed to a deal beforehand... we spent the day going to lots of tailors and gem shops so he could get commision... in return I went to lots of temples and sites and didn`t have to pay a thing!

If travelling on the train or bus always keep valuables on you... a lot of things get stolen if you stow them away.

Always check that the lock works on your bedroom door and take a spare padlock just in case.

As for bombings... they have mainly been in southern thailand. Sure, there have been a couple in bangkok over the years but that`s the case with nearly all major cities so you really shouldn`t worry about it.

Let me know if you need any advice on places to stay etc.... If you`re planning on staying on the Khoa san I`d recommend you stay 3mins away on soi rambutri which is a lot nicer. Have a great time out there... I`m so jealous!

If you are a single woman, do not go!!!! If you have to go, contact your American Embassy immediately upon arrival, and find the nearest Western Hotel, like a Marriott or Sheraton and find someone - preferably another woman who speaks English, get a cell phone and her number in it and always talk to someone in English in the cab saying things like I will see you shortly, or I'll be there in a few minutes, etc. Never indicate you are travelling alone!!!

For anyone who cares - remember the young woman who disappeared in Aruba - considered safe, and she was with her girlfriends - my comment is for caution, and really applies anywhere a young woman traveling laone should consider. It just so happens she is asking about Bankok, it would be the same answer no matter where she goes - take precautions, don't be ignorant and that's it!

Hey, why the thumbs down??? Isn't my recommendation practical and protective???
We never know what is going to happen tomorrow regardless of where you live, or where you go......I am not a prophet.

Yes, it's fine. Try and have somewhere booked to stay for the first night or so and stick to touristy places and you'll be fine.
It's as safe as any big city in the worldo--moreso, I think. I feel safer in Bangkok than New York City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Buens Aires, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta etc.etc.etc. Wherever you are you have to use common sense and remain in control of yourself and aware of your surroundings.
