Where can I buy the best Thai silk in Bangkok for a fair price? |
Travel Info Where can I buy authentic, original Thai silk in Bangkok for a reasonable price? How do I get to the store/s and what are the landmarks near it? What are the operating hours and phone number of the store/s? And how much does a yard cost (this is usually 45 width, right?)? Travel Tips Your question asked for "the best Thai silk in Bangkok for a fair price" For good silk - be willing to pay good money. DO NOT try to skimp and go to street vendors. Sure, you MIGHT find a genuine silk merchant but you also risk getting caught out with less than "best" silk. The best known name is Jim Thompson. You will find Jim Thompson's house at : 9 Surawong Road, Bangkok It is where he used to reside and is open for tours as well as silk merchandise for sale. DO NOT believe any touts hanging around the area who will try to tell you that it is closed and they will take you to another place to buy stuff. But from what I heard, there are not that much variety to buy at the house. There are other outlets - such as one at the Siam Paragon and one at the new airport. Go to http://www.jimthompson.com for more details and other outlets. Another company which also sell good quality silk is Shinawatra. http://www.shinawatrathaisilk.co.th/... In Bangkok, this company sells their silk through other resellers. Again - at a more reputable outlets in major shopping area. You will NOT see their product on street vendors. This is what I know. May be others answerers who are more of a shopper than I am can give you a more specific detail. Happy shopping! Others " The_Mouse " he good advise you. he said true. I think those 3 wheeled motor taxis with the canopy over the bench seat are so cool. When I was there the driver of one I was riding in told me if he delivered me to a certain address where they sold a variety of materials for making shirts, he would collect a reciept for a free tank of gas. All different varietys of materials and designs popular and very deluxe quality shirts. I agreed cause as I "know of" the taxi drivers that drive those mini taxis. They are quick, and they are courteous and get you quickly through city traffic. In this particular store they measure you for a perfect fit and taylor your shirt for you to be picked up whenever it is convenient for you. My answere then is to ask the taxi driver and he will advise you,,, take you efficiantly and friendly to your destination which he will know exactly how to get you there. Normally I buy silk at the Weekend Market but The Mouse's answer seems very interesting me. I think maybe the silk at the weekend market is not so brand name like he is talking about. i bought a lot of thai scarves from genuine dealers..u will find them at many malls or markets..i bought mine from sukhumvit..n they were registered n authentic dealers...look out for certification or seal of authenticity..the scarves come in good packs with a note certifying quality.. I agree with the people that mentioned Jim Thompson from what I've heard, but the prices can be high. There are a couple Jim Thompson outlet stores in Bangkok, I took some visitors there recently and they purchased quite a few things at the outlets. I don't know anything about silk myself, but at the Surawong outlet, it sells mostly fabric, which sounds like what your looking for at savings of around 50%. The outlet store on Surawong Rd. is on the same side of the street as the main retail store, just a few blocks up toward the river. Here's the website: http://www.jim-thompson.com/sales_outlet... live in Bkk |
