What is the white string thai people put on your arm called? |
Travel Info the white string the thai people put on your arm is some sort of a blessing but iam unsure what it is called can any one help thanks sean Travel Tips Gerald J's answer is quite nice but actually there are many times when normal people (not monks) as part of a religious ceremony put sai sin on someone that is the focus of the ceremony. For example, when people get married, the elder guests at the wedding ceremony will attach sai sin to the wrist of the bride and groom. Also at the ceremony when somebody dies sai sin will be put around both the dead person's wrists (the person's hands will be together to make a wai - like praying position for Christians) by the elder members of the dead person's family but sometimes by Buddhist monks - whether or not a monk does it depends on what the people in the local area believe to be the correct way - different parts of Thailand do in different ways. There are many ways in which sai sin are used at Thai religious ceremonies. Others The name of the string is "sai sin," it is meant to ward off ghosts and evil. They are usually put on by a Monk, my wife sometimes get's one at the temple, and I guess they must work because I've yet to see a ghost around our house. live in Bangkok I don't know the english word...but i know it is made from raw cotton-- i call it "bye" or "qwan" which is a spirit of confidence. Welcoming and yes, blessing. have one right now. plus a book in Thai on customs and culture it's called sai sin. it can be put on by anyone older than or who loved u. yes, it's some sort of blessing. um my mom told me they call it "mutt kahn" [ tie around the wrist ] but i think thats laos terms..whoops |
