What are the do's and donts of Thailand? |
Travel Info Jus looking for a few suggestions of things to do and avoid doing in Thailand, this could range from activities, to meals, to walks, to rule breaking, safety etc. Travel Tips Looking at the answers you received, that should give you a pretty good idea of what not to do and how to behave. I lived in Thailand a long-time so know something more of the culture than most tourists. When you first get their you think everybody is totally happy because they all smile. Well it's not like that, in some ways the smile is more like a defence mechanism. Getting angry in public is definitely a no-no, Thais do not like that. They will always smile whatever the situation even when they are fuming mad. This sometimes leads to extreme aggression if they are pushed too far, probably because feelings had been bottled up for a long time. Another thing definitely to be avoided -never insult a Thai man in public, this will be seen as a loss of face for him and he will do something about it, which sometimes can have extremely unpleasant consequences. Despite Thailand being classed as a peaceful nice country which it normally is, behind the scenes there is sometimes extreme violence. But this is not normally directed at tourists unless they are stupid and ask for it. I well remember two British gangsters who came to Pattaya thinking they could impress the local Mafia... not a good idea! After one week one was dead, the other one fled in terror. But as I said for tourists is not really a great problem. Try to avoid contact with police if you can, they are corrupt like many other countries. When eating in local restaurant also be careful, Thai dishes for Europeans normally toned down a bit, but if you eat in places away from tourism areas you might get the real thing and believe me you will not forget that! I once had a spicy tuna salad which nearly blew my head off and was in agony for about two hours with my throat on fire and had to douse it with copious quantities of Singha beer. Mosquitoes are vicious and some protection is advisable. Of course one of the little bastards always survives and gets you during the night and it itches like hell. Recently came a cross a useful device, it's a little plastic thing with a button on it and electrical contacts on the bottom. You place it over the sting, press the button five time which gives slight electric shocks and this stops the itching within a few minutes... tried it and actually works. enjoy your trip Others Don't mention the war. They were on the Japs side. DO - Get a suntan and enjoy yourself DONT - Pay for sex or eat dog Don't even *implicate* yourself in any kind of drug smuggling shenanigans. A quick search (Thailand dos and donts? ) in Google will give you loads of information including the following: Thailand Some do's and don'ts for Thailand http://www.hasekamp.net/dodont.htm...
