I need basic thai language to get me around bangkok for a day.. like how they call taxi, water, toilet, etc? |

If you need basic assistance like "FOOD PLACE, TOILET, CAB/TAXI, HOW MUCH, THANK YOU, SORRY, NO, YES, I ONLY UNDERSTAND ENGLISH" - you will not have problem communicating your need in in english. Learning Thai is a good idea but for what you want - you WILL NOT be able to learn it and remember it that quickly anyway. So don't worry too much about it. (Thai is tonal anyway so reading it in english characters will not make you pronounce it correctly) Millions of tourist go there every year - they cope fine without knowing any Thai. Relax. All you need to know is - if in doubt - ask. Smile a lot. Be patient. Do not expect thigns to operate the way it is in your country - this is a different culture. Smile a lot and be pateint. As far as "discounts" - if you are buying from stalls and not from a department store - you can haggle. You will get better price if you buy several items Have a great trip. If you're staying in Bangkok, you needn't worry too much about speaking Thai. You WILL get by with English. However, as is the case anywhere, the Thai people will interact better with you if you make the effort to speak a little of their language. You have already been give the basics you requested so I won't burden you with any more, except to add "smile and the world smiles with you" is especially true in Thailand. |
