II'm too young to hire a car, what are some alternatives? |
Travel Info I'm plannin a trip to Thailand next year and I'll be 19, but you have to be 21 to hire a car. What are some other forms of transport I could use? preferably not public, I want to be able to do what I want, when I want. Travel Tips First of all, even if you were old enough to hire a car, driving in Bangkok is unlike anywhere else in the world and if you have never driven here, better leave the driving up to the locals. Not only is traffic knarly and unpredictable, the roads signs are in Thai and once you get lost that is it. There are 16.8 million people in Bangkok alone. That makes driving here very, very difficult and since it is now the rainy season, it is even worse. The best thing to do is hire a taxi for the whole day. You can find them everywhere for 1500 baht per day and they will drive you anywhere you want to go and stay with you the whole day. For the same price as a rent a car this makes perfect sense as the taxi drivers know their way around the city, will help carry your shopping packages, and most of all you never have to worry about finding a parking space which can be extremely difficult. Many taxi drivers can speak some english, tell them what you want to find for shopping, etc., and they will take you to the deals you will never find on your own. Taxi drivers, for the same price will even take you to Ayutthaya, to Nakon Nayok to the waterfalls and a host of other cool places. This is the easiest and best way to get around and enjoy yourself without getting stressed out. I have a car and drive here, but 50% of the time I still use Taxis due to excessive traffic I don't want to deal with or going to a place that has no parking, like in the city. Source(s): Live in Thailand for years Other Travel Tips bike or scootere is an awesome mode of transportation...our friend arrived in England with his bike, 2000 dollars, a back pack, saw most of england, sail on Irish see for !50 dollars, arrived in dublin, rode wherever he liked, then off to scotland and home again....he bought a ticket good for six months which is cheaper, could come home whenever....many people helped him out, he met many more people this way, stayed all over for free, was sent on to family in next town,...and the end of the two months he arrived home with 1500 dollars left...and he brought his bike with him... Are you planning on going around Thailand or just stay in one city/island? If you are planning on only staying in 1 place a small motorbike is by far the best choice. You can avoid all the queues and you can stop anywhere. Make sure you wear a helmet and that you have a driverslicense in case the police stop you... But normally when they see a foreigner on a motorbike they just ignore you (if you're wearing a helmet..) I assume you've got a driving licence?Yes? You can hire a car in Thailand.Simple.Just dont use international companies like Avis, they're the only ones who may remotely refuse you.Locals will be glad of the business The rates for a car and driver are not too much higher as labor is the reasonable part of the equation... - this might be best as they apply their own special form of insanity on the roads - every day I see motorcyclists pull out on the hwy - and then look back??? - they lose 3 people an hour here in accidents - a driver will stop wherever you want... |
