Will places for shopping be open during songkran in Bangkok?

Travel Info
Going to Thailand and I will be in Bangkok over Songkran, I wanted to do some shopping during that time. Will that be possible?

Will shops, markets be open?

Should I be concerned that my new purchases will be destroyed by water/ talcum powder?

and restaurants/ bars/ clubs will they be open during songkran?

Travel Tips
generally songkran isnt a huge thing in Bangkok, so there will not be any problems with shopping getting wet. If you are overly concerned just take a plastic bag out with you so you can double bad things.

I went about the same time last year. saw nothing in Bangkok. Also went to pattaya and got wet through several times but with it being so hot its wasnt ever a problem.

Just a tip though, if you go out during this time wear clothes that dry easily and wear things that you are not really concerned about getting dirty/wet/covered with talc

restaurants/ bars/ clubs generally will have ppl outside with water pistols and the like but nothing inside will be allowed. But once again in Bangkok you will find it hard to find anywhere that does it. Venture out to the coast to see it in all its glory.

Its just one huge water fight. Get a water pistol and have some fun.

Wish i was coming with you!

Shop only during the night when everything is peaceful. Be ready to be wet during the day...
Most everything is open during Songkran. The problem will be in getting to these places without getting wet. Best to do all your shopping as early in the day as possible. By say 12:00 noon, the water starts to flow, and by late afternoon, it is almost impossible to stay dry, unless you take a taxi from your hotel front door to the shopping place your going to. This year Songkran is 4 days, 13-16 April. Plastic bags for everyhting, wallet, phone, camera, etc if you take it, but best to take as little as possible with you when you venture outside. Last year I was soaked for 3 days, and many people get colds fom being wet and then getting a chill. Bottom line prepare well before you arrive and make the most of it and enjoy it. You know that saying...........When in Rome.....do as the Romans do.
